About Me
Michael Halpert is a Realtor with RE/MAX Realty Group in Gaithersburg with more than 35 years of experience with licenses in DC and MD. Michael is a native Washingtonian; raised in Silver Spring and then moving to the Gaithersburg in his teens. Michael had an affinity for real estate at a very early age; he purchased his first house while 18 years old and in college where he rented rooms to pay the mortgage. His love for real estate never dimed.
Michael takes great pride helping first-time home buyers and assisting those with complex financial or legal challenges. One of his most complex transactions involved two sisters who thought their deceased parents lost the home to foreclosure. Michael successfully negotiated settlements with two mortgage lenders (prior to Realtor prohibitions) with one lender reducing their balance to zero. He also helped navigate DC Superior Court to allow the Estate to continue pending the sale. He also secured a $30,000+ refund by challenging the DC government's zoning change to “blighted” causing the property tax rate to triple.
Michael is a licensed CPA and spent 35 years with the Treasury Department as a financial investigator and a senior supervisor. He led some of the largest and most complex tax investigations that often times ended in large civil assessments and criminal indictments. Michael took great pride during his career teaching complex topics such as abusive transactions, like-kind exchanges, reverse exchanges, partnership taxation issues and tax and financial planning for small businesses.
Besides representing clients, Michael is real estate investor and property manager where he manages more than 10 properties in DC and MD. He is married to a retired CPA and has two children, both in the medical field. Michael enjoys playing softball, going on leisurely motorcycle rides and spending time with his wife and friends.
