A good number of residents in the area use their bicycle as the cycling network is very extensive. The transit in Spenard is rather poor. Nonetheless, the neighborhood is served by a few bus lines, and bus stops are not very far-removed from most properties. However, the best transportation option in Spenard is very often driving.

Spenard is unique in that it contains both vibrant and quiet areas, making it appealing to more people. Even though the ambience is not the most lively in this area with its about 10 nightlife venues, there are options for nighttime activities. At the same time, this part of the municipality is quiet, as the streets are generally quite peaceful, although there are still several noisier sections, especially around the railway line or the airport (Ted Stevens Anchorage Intl).
