People who want to reside in a compact community will also enjoy the very pedestrian-friendly nature of this part of the city; all daily errands can be run without the use of a car, and there are also a fair number of businesses in proximity. Dorchester is fairly suited for cycling.

Dorchester is reasonably good for those who need a quiet atmosphere, as the streets are generally calm, although that is not the case closer to one of the railway lines, Sargeant William G Walsh Expy or General Casimir Pulaski Skwy. There are over 100 parks nearby for residents to enjoy, such as Malibu Beach and UMass Harborwalk, which makes them very easy to access from most locations within this part of Boston.
