How does a nice guy like me end up an award-winner and Real Estate Broker?

I definitely took the road less traveled to real estate… the one that runs through the local cemetery. The first piece of real estate I sold had subterranean accommodations, if you know what I mean. After a while I found that I preferred working with the LIVING! No offense to the dearly departed, but they aren’t a very good source of referrals.
Loan Officer at Industrial Bank. A one-branch business bank in Van Nuys, CA is NOT the first place that comes to mind when you're looking for a mortgage. But a grave-digger has got to start somewhere! Eventually, I moved to Oakmont Mortgage as a Secondary Market analyst, then as a Wholesale representative working a full range of 1st and 2nd mortgages. Now this was back in the days of the 125% No-Equity, No-Appraisal craze that Dan Marino pitched for First Plus. As the nation’s largest wholesaler of 125% loans, quality control became critical. Charged with streamlining the Home Equity process from Marketing to Underwriting to Investor Relations, I was instrumental in stabilizing and expanding our business. As a result, I was promoted to perform the same miracle for the entire product line. As Chief Credit Officer (head of underwriting) I changed the corporate culture to one that centered on the borrower, not the bottom line. And guess what… we increased profitability! Fame, Fortune and the Admiration of my peers. Ah, what a life!
And then… SEATTLE!
Pulling on my Superman cape, I moved to the Great Pacific Northwest. Our Seattle Region (5 states) was lacking in compliance, production, and organization. I accidentally talked myself into a demotion and the move (Hmmm, clean air AND water, OR smog and drought?). Accepting the Regional VP title in 1999, we quickly brought the client-centered culture to bear. If we didn’t do our jobs to the fullest there was no way we could deliver an outstanding customer experience. Although not an immediate success, perseverance and vision lead us to the top of customer satisfaction charts. When Oakmont was acquired by a competitor, I took my talents and experience to the common man and started serving buyers and borrowers directly.
In the early-2000s I hooked up with a 20+ year real estate veteran to provide financing for our clients. Through the process I identified a number of opportunities to create a smoother, more client-satisfying experience. We joined forces at Haven Homes & Investments @ Keller Williams as I moved into an Operations position to oversee the transactional details of our ever-increasingly successful real estate partnership. Alas, the relationship soured and I struck out on my own in 2013.
So now I’m proud to be a part of RE/MAX Elite where I can do what is truly my passion: Working with clients to achieve their real estate plans and dreams. Helping people to Buy, Sell, and Invest… there’s nothing better!
Oh yeah. That “Award-Winning” I mentioned earlier: 3rd Place ribbon in the 4th Grade 50-yard Dash at Lassen Elementary (drops mike, walks off stage)!
