On June 20 2015, The Three Village Historical Society located in Setauket on Long Island hosted a day long event, "Culper Spy Day, Our Revolutionary Story". The hit AMC series "TURN" has drawn a great deal of attention to Long Island and its place in American history.

After defeating the British in "The Siege of Boston" which ended on March 17, 1776, General Washington correctly reasoned the British needed another major port city to re-supply their army. The most logical target would be the Port of New York. Washington moved his army through Connecticut onto Long Island. There are many Inns and Taverns on Long Island which boast that George Washington slept or ate there. Certainly, the most notable is the George Washington Manor which is set on the edge of Roslyn Harbor in the Village of Roslyn. The structure still exists today with the old tavern room just the way it was when General Washington enjoyed his tankard of brew.

Washington advanced his army towards the Island of Manhattan to defend this very important port. British General Howe challenged the Continental Army at what is know as the "Battle of Long Island" on August 27,1776. This is worthy of note because it was the first battle of the Revolutionary War after declaring Independence from England at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. General Washington and his army suffered significant losses. However, he was able to evacuate from Long Island to Manhattan with a great part of his army and supplies. General Howe captured New York City and its critical port. The continental army retreated out of New York into New Jersey.

These events created the stage for the "Culper Spy Ring". Information gained on ship movement and supplies from the Long Island Spies played an essential part in the Continental Army winning the Revolutionary War. The spy ring centered around the Villages of Oyster Bay, Smithtown and Setauket where old family names such as Woodhull, Townsend and Brewster still exist today.

The highlight of Spy Day was the one hour walking tour of historic locations which date back to 1655. We stopped by Woodhull's Farm, the Setauket Village Green and Patriots Rock. We visited the cemetery where the leader of the Setauket Culper Spy ring is buried. The residents of Setauket are proud of their contribution to American history and they show their pride through the appearance of their picturesque and historic waterfront community of Setauket.
