Nissequogue Area Insight

  • Although visitors to Nissequogue are impressed by its country lanes traversing the wooded and pastoral landscapes, many people do not realize that the Village is a peninsula surrounded by three different bodies of water. The Nissequogue River forms the boundary on the west side of the Village. This is a great place for canoeing or kayaking. However, be careful of the changing tides or you will fight a losing battle trying to row against the strong currents. The river runs to the north and empties into Long Island Sound. The Sound is the northern boundary of the Village and home to two of the town beaches, Long Beach and Short Beach. Both beaches offer white sand, concession stands and parking for residents of the Town of Smithtown. There is also a boat ramp and marina located on Stony Brook Harbor across from Long Beach. It is this beautiful and bucolic harbor that forms the eastern border. Together these three diverse water ways act as natural buffers to the Village and add to its splendor.

Smithtown land mass consists of 111.4 sq. miles. It is the proud home to 30 town beaches, 20 neighborhood playgrounds, and over 38 athletic fields, in addition to three state parks: Sunken Meadows State Park, Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, and Nissequogue River State Park, along with Blydenburgh County Park and Miller Pond.

A wide range of recreational activities are available at these public venues such as golf, tennis, fresh and salt water fishing, and boating. There are miles of public beaches offering full range of facilities, rest rooms, changing rooms, showers and snack bars.

There are playing fields for our residents to be challenged by competitive team activities such as hand ball, baseball, soft ball, soccer and roller hockey. There are numerous children's activities such as spray parks, swings, see saws, climbing toys and slides. There are adult activities such as horse shoe pits, fireplaces, barbecues and nature trails for our once-were-young residents. An abundance of band stands and gazebos feature live music on summer evenings or individual activities to charge our athletic abilities.

All these facilities are expertly managed by our Recreational Department and maintained by our Parks, Buildings and Grounds Department. Our extensive park system is just one of the reasons that makes Smithtown such a fine place to live, work and raise a family.
