Many people don’t know it, but tucked a few blocks away from the college-town vibe of New Paltz’s busy main drag, lies a mini Colonial Williamsburg of sorts. Ten acres of the village, originally founded by French Huguenots in 1678, have been designated a National Historic Landmark District and feature a number of historic buildings including homes and an early church. A stroll through the Huguenot District of New Paltz is indeed a trip through time and can be enjoyed as an informal walk through the neighborhood or through one of the many events offered by the Huguenot Historical Society, which maintains an excellent and informative website on the district. One of my favorite events – sampling local cider – is on tap for June. The Society plans to host a local cider market and tasting for Saturday June 20 from noon to 4 p.m. Makers from Marlboro, Warwick and Washingtonville will be among the local purveyors showcasing their handiwork. I’m looking forward to sampling a crabapple variety of hard cider made using the ingredients that the first residents of the town would have used in the 17th Century.

You will just love this village! Of course it has a college, so you would expect to find some great spots. Oh my, one shop and cafe or restaurant after another. It is so much fun to park your car, walk into each one of these little shops and discover so many treasures and some great food!
