Lake Ronkonkoma, known as “the Lake” to local residents, has more history than you think! It used to be the place where the city’s rich and famous would spend their summers. The wealthy from New York City and around the island built their summer estates near Lake Ronkonkoma and it quickly became the place to be in summer months. Today, the lake is home to recreational parks and a local beach.

The lake is also home to a few legends. There is a “Lady of the Lake”, and rumors that there are underwater caverns that lead to the Long Island Sound! These and other stories about Long Island are even featured in the “Weird New York” and “Weird U.S.” books. How cool is that!
  • Its been a cold and snowy month but the residents of the area are taking advantage of the school break and the weather. Because of the below zero wind chill and temps this February, Lake Ronkonkoma is officially frozen and the kids are wasting no time making the best of the winter weather.

Agnew and Taylor Hardware Store has been a fixture on the corner of Hawkins and Road and Portion Road (CR16) since 1905. Originally called "Farm to Market Road" because it was a dirt road that ran from Brookhaven to Smithtown. Between 1935 and 1943 it became a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project which assisted in the economical growth of the area. (get out those history books)
