Hopewell Junction Area Insight

  • Fishkill Farms is an organic farm in Southern Dutchess County. The farm boasts some 150 acres of producing farmland, thanks to plenty of hard work plus the re-acquisition of land sold to other farmers. The farm's biggest crop is apples, but there are also other fruit trees, organic berries and 100 varieties of eco-certified vegetables, as well as eggs from pasture-raised hens. There's also a farm store that's open year-round, along with community harvests and other events. Fishkill Farms also offers CSA = Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) which has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. I have been a CSA member of Fishkill Farms for years and absolutely love the super fresh produce they grow. The unique and different vegetables I've received in my CSA have been exciting and educational.

The advantage for the farmer is that they get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, and they received payment early in the year which helps with cash flow. They actually get to know the people who eat the food they grow. The advantage for the consumer is that they get to eat ultra fresh food with all the flavor and vitamin benefits, as they get exposed to different vegetables and new ways of cooking them, and they get to develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food. The CSA is broken into two seasons summer: (June - Nov) and winter: (Dec - Mar). This is a family run farm, originally established in 1913 by former Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. Fishkill Farms is a wonderful family fun place to visit.
