One of my favorite places to go in the neighborhood is Warner Castle, located on Mount Hope Avenue. It was built in 1854 by Horatio Gates Warner, an attorney and newspaper writer, and was fashioned to look like a castle. Several notable Rochesterians have lived in the castle and at one point it was a sanitarium. Today, it is home to the Rochester Civic Garden and is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. till 4 p.m.Behind the castle is an extraordinary sunken garden, designed by noted landscape architect Stephen DeForest in the 1920's. He is the same person that designed the grounds of the George Eastman House. The gardens were restored in 1991, with a lot of stone work and repainting done to bring the location back to its original glory. The garden is open to the public free of charge and is a popular spot for wedding photographers. The garden is almost always quiet and my much loved spot to sit and reflect.
