East Rochester Area Insight

  • The community of East Rochester was developed from many families of Italian descend coming together for work at the Piano Works or at the Car Shops in the early 1900's. They set up their own grocery stores, bakery, meat market, tailor, cobbler, school and Ccurches and as time progressed, it became a community within a community. Today it has its own zip code and identity. The Piano Works and the Car Shops are gone but the community lives on.

    East Rochester, NY
East Rochester began its journey as the Village of Despatch. Incorporated in 1897 the community was intentionally planned around the New York Central Railroad's mainline. Most of the early residents of Despatch were employees of The Merchants Despatch Corporation, a manufacturer of refrigerated rail cars, and the Aeolian Piano Corporation. In 1906 the village was renamed East Rochester to highlight its nearness to the city of Rochester. Today, with the 490 expressway readily accessible, the commute to downtown is under 15 minutes.

The Village of East Rochester takes great pride in its parks department and the village sports several meticulously maintained communal spaces. Edmund Lyon Park is home to East Rochester's war memorials. Each year on Memorial Day the village concludes its festivities in the park's gazebo with a special ceremony honoring our nation's heroes.

The Piano Works Mall is one of the area's most unique and interesting destinations. In 1985 the Aeolian Piano Corporation stopped production and the next year the factory was converted into shops, offices, and restaurants. The Piano Works Mall is also home to the Weaver's Guild of Rochester. Stop by and see a master weaver in action, or take a class and learn to create textiles of your own.

East Rochester is a community committed to enriching the lives of its citizens. The East Rochester Youth Activity Center provides recreation and extracurricular education to children and teens. The center offers many activities and programs, from ping pong and foosball, to tutoring and career counseling.
The Senior Citizens Center focuses on the needs of town residents 55+. The Senior Center provides information and resources on health and wellness, as well as social events like line dancing, and quilting groups.
