The historic boathouses now located on the west side of the City Pier were originally located along the shoreline of the lake near the entry of the current pier. The pier was completed in the early 1850's and the first boathouses were moved to the present location starting in 1887. Shortly thereafter the Northern Central Railway installed a railway to serve the steamboats that docked along the pier. During the early 1900's the boathouses were used primarily for storing boats, grapes and other farm products shipped via steamboats. In the 1960's there was a movement to get rid of the boathouses. They were referred to as an "eyesore". Again in the 1980's there was discussion regarding removing them to make way for additional marina dockage.Today they are a popular tourist attraction and are privately owned and used primarily for docking boats.
