Westfield is a family friendly town with a one-stop shop atmosphere and a warm, welcoming host of shops that are sure to meet everyone’s needs, not just around the holidays but all year. One of these shops is Castle Bootery, a family owned shoe store that for 65 years. They specialize in infant, child, and young adult footwear, mostly with a limited section for adults. That’s fine for me as it’s always stressful to think of where will I get shoes for the kids!

When you have growing children who need to be measured regularly there is no substitute for the personal service you get from professionals who aren’t working for iPod money at the mall and can competently fit your children with the right shoe for them. This takes the worry out of where to go. If you are on the email list, you get the added benefits of knowing when the sales are as well as neat things like when they offer shoe tying classes! Afterwards, you can walk around to many of the area fine restaurants for a victory bite to eat before going home, So everyone wins!

I want to highlight a local deli in Westfield that offers consistent delicious food and has the best coffee around. The Robert Treat Deli is a stopping ground for morning commuters and locals who live in the area. Their pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches and even fresh rolls are all delicious.

For lunch, Jack, one of the owners cooks a bunch of hot foods including his specialty, the Jersey Girl quiche...this is an exceptional dish! The deli also does catering (and has catered two of my kid's birthday parties) including full meals for Thanksgiving, Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. Stop by for your next delicious cup of coffee at the Robert Treat Deli and check it out for yourself.
  • There is a tour of Notable Homes in Westfield, organized by The Friends of the New Jersey Festival Orchestra (formerly the Westfield Symphony ), scheduled for May 10, 2014. This is the 30th year of this tour and the proceeds help support live classical music in the area. The orchestras season finale concert will be performed at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, itself a structure of architectural interest, on May 31st. The program entitled REBIRTH and RENEWAL features Mahler’s Second Symphony, a familiar and moving work. Follow the link below for tickets and information.

Some say downtown Westfield is like a drive through Short Hills Mall because of all the high end, nationally recognized retail stores in town. That description only tells part of the story, it doesn't include the charming boutiques and specialized small shops that give Westfield its unique flavor. Yes, of course, the Gap, Baby Gap, Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic, Eileen Fisher, Urban Outfitters, Coldwater Creek and Williams Sonoma are all within a few block radius. Betwixt and between the big outfits are Bridget's Irish Cottage for all things Celtic, Brummer's Homemade Chocolates, a sweet shop stop, The Castle Bootery where generations of tiny toddler feet have been shod with their first brogues and the Town Book Store where you can get a personal recommendation from someone who's read the book, not seen the movie. Park in any of the several municipal lots and explore, explore, explore. If you build up an appetite, see my previous blog ....Lunch, Lunch, Lunch.
  • There are just too many places to eat a great Lunch in Westfield. My favorite is Xocolatz, pronounced like the sweet, but this restaurant is not a candy store. I've watched them grow from a takeout kiosk that delivered a killer BLT by bicycle into a full menu American bistro. The service is attentive, the menu varied and imaginative. The Turning Point is known for its breakfast, brunch and lunch. Sometimes you have to have waffles with fruit for lunch and they will provide. Vickie's Dinner has a burger plate that satisfies the occasional need for red meat and fries, very well indeed. Tinga covers the Mexican option with chicken, beef or vegetarian 12 inch burrito meals, as well as an eight incher with salad choice. We've only scratched the surface. Come discover your own favorites, but save room for dinner because the evening eating locations are bountiful.

C.J. Reycraft, Jr.,has been chef at the deservedly esteemed, pricey, liquor licensed Chez Catherine for half the new century now. In 2014 he will open his own brasserie at the location where Isabella’s recently closed (39 Elm St.). It will be named Amuse (half of the phrase amuse bouche, generally describing a free little taste presented on the house preceding a meal.
This establishment will give us a second French choice in a town that seemed to have one French, 12 sushi and 77 Italian restaurants. And as a BYOB restaurant, we will have the option of enjoying a French repast with wines from our own cellars. How chouette is that?
