Tenafly, New Jersey is a very attractive municipality located in northeastern Bergen County. Given its position in the state, Tenafly can easily qualify as a suburb of New York City. In fact, many of Tenafly's residents make the daily trek into New York.

Although it was only incorporated as a borough at the end of the 19th century, the area was well known and populated by Dutch settlers as far back as the latter half of the 17th century. At that time it was known as "Tiene Vly" or the "Ten Swamps". Other names given to Tenafly by Dutch settlers were the "Little Valley" and the "Willow Meadow".

In 1688 a large tract of land was granted to Colonel Jacobus Van Cortland who served as the 30th and the 33rd mayor of New York City. Van Cortland was the grandfather of John Jay, a founding father of the United States and the first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. One of Van Cortland's daughters, a Mrs. Depeyster, inherited most of the area that makes up modern day Tenafly.

As stated previously, Tenafly was incorporated as a borough very late in the 19th century, 1894 to be exact. At that time a movement known as "Boroughitis" was sweeping New Jersey and Bergen County in particular. Attempts by the NJ Legislature to reform local governments and the local school systems caused a break up in many of Bergen County's townships into smaller “boroughs”. The borough government promised to provide more services that New Jersey residents living close to New York wanted, as opposed to the more rural communities located elsewhere in the state. Between 1894 and 1895, forty new boroughs were formed in New Jersey with the lion share being in Bergen County.

The street plan and geography of Tenafly has conformed to its natural hills and valleys. Far eastern Tenafly, known as the "East Hill" has a higher elevation than the rest of the borough. Tenafly terminates at the far eastern New Jersey Palisades overlooking the Hudson River.

Tenafly High School was awarded the National Blue Ribbon School Award by the US Department of Education in 2005. It was the only high school in New Jersey to receive this award in 2005 and one of only 38 public high schools nationwide to receive this award. In September of 2014, Tenafly High School was ranked 17th out of 339 schools by "New Jersey Monthly" magazine. In 2013, the "Daily Beast" ranked Tenafly High 253rd in the nation and 20th among schools in New Jersey.

A number of well known people have, at one time or another, called Tenafly home. Among those who were either born in, lived in or had close ties with Tenafly are the following.

However, access for commuters New York is via the George Washington Bridge. There are plenty of regional malls and employment via NJ Route 4 or Interstate 80 which is within two miles south. Route 9W and the Palisade Interstate Parkway are located in the borough’s eastern section. They link the area with the New York Thruway in the North and Route 95 to the south.

Tenafly is a great town known for their top ranked school system. The downtown area is filled with small cafes, movie theatre and shopping, which gives it a relaxing small town atmosphere. It's a great place to raise your children. Besides the good school system, they have lots of programs for the children which allow them to socialize.
  • The Tenafly Railroad Station, which was built in 1874, is located in the center of town and is now a wonderful cafe serving the community. The stone structure remains a monument to Tenafly's evolution from farming community to a sophisticated well homogeneous society. It is marked by a Bergen County Historical Society plaque and is owned by the Borough.
This beautiful welcoming cafe is one example among the many great places Tenafly offer its residents. Many parks for kids and adults are surrounding the excellent schools that keep the children safe and cultured..
