This private community around the lake is "alive" again with boats back in the water. Sky Hawks are practicing and lots of parties on the beaches. Special water birds have claimed an old dead tree for their nesting sight. It is perfect for their somewhat awkward take offs and landings. A more graceful pair of Swans are proud parents parading their brood around so all can see them.
If a person is really patient, a bald eagle can be seen fishing. With its incredible wing span and precision, it is able to grab a large fish with ease. An amazing sight! All can be seen from the boardwalk in this really special community.

Got up this morning and saw what a beautiful day it was grabbed the dogs and went to the Sparta Glen for a hike. If you forget your clean up bags for the dogs they are supplied at the enterance for the Glen. We hiked up and down the babbling brooks in the sunshine. If you have time to pack a picnic lunch there are plenty of tables and grills. It is a wonderful place to spend the day...climb the Sparta Mountain and see the spectacular views.

Mulching the yard and planting flowers in pots, listening to the birds sing and bees buzz as all the flowers and trees around start to bloom. This is my favorite time of year in Sussex County! If you have not been up to this county, now is the time to take a ride and see the what you've been missing!

It will soon be time to set the clocks back and enjoy the season. Sussex County is soaked in tremendous colors with beauty beyond description. The wood burning fireplaces are beginning to come alive with just a hint of hickory in the air. Boats are taking their last voyage of the year. Farm stands are still open with lots of pumpkins, gourds, home made pies & jams, mums and plenty of cornstalks for home decorations. Several offer hay rides and corn maze challenges. Make one last effort to enjoy the moment before settling in for the winter months. Come see for yourself. You might just find a pumpkin with your name on it!
  • Wondering what to do for your child's next birthday party? The Sparta area has so many great options! One great idea is to have a bowling party at Sparta Lanes. If you have a very active little one who enjoys sports, the Fieldhouse is the place to go. Another fun place to run, jump and climb is Camp Iliff. Does your child do cartwheels, flips, and jumps nonstop? Have your child's party at Titan Gymnastics. For the budding artist, A La Art is a wonderful place to chose a favorite piece of pottery to paint with friends. Maybe your child would like to create their very own furry friend at Build A Bear. A great place for the slightly older birthday child is Laser One for a laser tag and arcade party.

As a mom of four children I have hosted or attended children's birthday parties at all of these venues and they have all been wonderful experiences. These parties are very easy and stress free for the parents and the children go home with smiles on their faces and memories to last forever!
  • If anyone is an avid sushi enthusiast like myself, then you will much appreciate this post. It's been my mission ever since I moved up to Sussex County to try and find "comparable" sushi to what I was used to in New York. After many mediocre meals and hundreds of dollars, I stumbled upon Sushi Ya in Sparta. A small quaint restaurant of only about 40 seats give or take, at the end of the Sparta Theater Center strip mall. Owned by a lovely husband and wife, who both work actively work at the restaurant.

The sushi was top notch! Amazingly fresh, for after chatting with the owners, they receive daily deliveries of fish. That of which they hand select and even refuse if the quality doesn't meet their standards. What really is amazing is the menu. There are so many unique items that place it above and beyond anyone else relatively near. They have plenty of rolls for the beginners and plenty of exotic choices for the advanced sushi goers like Uni and Geoduck.
The fish is fresh, the service is amazing, the atmosphere is cozy, and all for a reasonable price! So if you are that avid sushi eater or even a beginner looking for a place to start....this is the place to go in Sussex County! I can assure you it's fantastic!

Having lived all my life in Bergen County, I have to admit I was a little worried how I would adjust to living in Sussex County. Now, having lived here in Sparta for almost nine years, I am so happy I made that move. I grew up in Mahwah and I have come to realize that Sparta is very similar.

Both areas have the beautiful views of the mountains and the conveniences of shopping, leisure, and commuting capabilities but here in Sussex County there is less traffic. As far as activities for children to do, there are so many choices. Believe me, I know. I have four children and they are involved in soccer, dance, taekwondo, marching band, school plays, and more!

In the summer the kids love spending time with their friends at Lake Saginaw. I have to admit they have me running around like crazy but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the fact that they can be involved in so many things. Do I have any regrets about moving to Sussex County? Absolutely not!

As winter began to close out in Sparta I had the opportunity to go to a party for one of my grandkids. The party was a lot of fun with great conversations and excellent food and drink for all. I was lamenting with my youngest daughter about the horrible winter and not being able to get my brindle pit, Tige, out for a long walk. Kaitlyn also told me that her boy, Frank, was also looking to get out for a good run. After a bit of taunting that I could not climb anymore, we decided that we would head out the next day for Sparta Glen and if no one was around, let our boys run. Kaitlyn says to me "let's climb up to the top" and I was game.

The climb starts by the shelter where there is a road that goes right to the top. The dogs took off and lead the way. Tige and Frank actually hopped up the mountain and looked around at me saying, "Dad, come on! Hop up the mountain with me." Years ago, maybe, but slow and easy is the way for me now. I did sit down and breathe as we progressed to the top. Kaitlyn was also saying this is quite a climb. Truth is, she could probably run to the top with the two boys.

Well, we reached the top and were rewarded with views of our whole town of Sparta. The picture I posted is of very early spring. The town of Sparta with church steeples and the The Plaza of Lake Mohawk all was before us. We met a fellow climber on top and he took a great picture of worn out me and Kaitlyn at the top. I know if I did that once a week it would put me in the best shape ever.

The Sparta area has some of the most beautiful spots to sit back (after a little work) and enjoy our great outdoors. Come visit our town for a day and try to explore a bit. This right now is the very best of seasons as we get ready for the boating and summer activities.

Sparta was # 2 on the NJ.Com list of the 50 safest towns in NJ! This is due to its low poverty level and burglaries which in 2011 were below 20. Sparta is a great town in Sussex County not only because of those stats, but because of its community spirit and beauty. There is a vast price range making this town desirable for most people.
