Margate City Area Insight

  • It may be September, but the shoulder season at the southern New Jersey Shore is nothing to "shrug" at! The sun is still warm, as are the ocean temperatures, the crowds are less, and the evenings are cooler; this makes it the perfect time to visit the shore. Local residents are often heard saying, "Come September, my vacation really begins!". Why not take advantage of the secret that all locals know, September and October are truly the most beautiful months at the beach.

Nearby Atlantic City is still boasting great headline entertainers, shows, and events. Your favorite gourmet restaurants from Cape May to Atlantic City are still open and finding a room at a quaint B & B or chic hotel is much easier. Whether you come for the Margate Fall Fun Fest (Sept 27th & 28th), Atlantic City Craft Beer Fest (Sept 19th), or some world class bird watching in Cape May, the southern Jersey Shore has something for everyone!

There is an exciting new trend popping up in many shore towns, Farmer's Markets. Up and down the Jersey Shore these wonderful home-town markets are bringing fresh produce, baked goods, locally sourced eggs and dairy, flowers, and regional delicacies. One market in particular, the Margate Community Farmer's Market, is a favorite of many Southern New Jersey tourists and locals alike. With over 40 vendors lined up for this summer, offering everything from fruits and vegetables to fresh baked breads, raw honey, locally roasted coffee and even barbecue ribs, MCFM has something for even the most discriminating foodie. The Margate Community Farmer's Market is open on Thursdays beginning June 18th from 8:30 to 12 noon. The market's last day is September 3rd. And if by chance you are in Ocean City, pop by their market which is held on Wednesdays from 8am - 1pm, June 25th- September 10th at the Tabernacle grounds between 5th and 6th streets in downtown Ocean City.

Margate ,Ventnor and Longport, have always been a summer destination for people in Philadelphia and Cherry Hill…coming every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day. What has happened in past years are that people see how easy the living is here and it has become a retirement area in some cases. They realize how a small town meets their needs.

Some people say "What do you do there?", well my answer is the same things you do anywhere else! We have fine and casual dining, places of worship, shopping, movies, shows, and casinos.
Anything you can find anyplace else and probably more. So when you are thinking of purchasing a home in our city, think about the future for a wonderful small town experience.

  • Margate's oldest commercial business district, also known as the Barbieri Coast, boasts the Annual Fall Fun Festival in late September. During the summer months you can also see free concerts. Daily activities include fine dining establishments for all meals. Ride your bike down and grab a coffee and doughnut at Juniors on your way out to a fishing trip. Stop back after for a beer from Maynard's, get some sushi at Tomatoes, and have your night cap at Memories while dancing the night away! Fun for everyone anytime of day.
  • One of a kind! Margate's Lucy the Elephant is the largest elephant in the world. She was constructed in 1881 and was so successful in bringing tourists to the area that the developer built two others on different shore areas, Unfortunately, Lucy is the only one to have survived the storms over the years. Guided tours are offered through her back leg, into her interior and finish in the howdah on the top providing magnificent views of Margate and Atlantic City. She has served as a real estate office, hotel, and a tavern for a short period in the past. Today you can enjoy the history of Lucy and Absecon Island by way of pictures and video when you visit.
  • One never gets tired of Margate's spectacular bay sunsets! These views are enjoyed by all from Amherst Avenue's, Restaurant Row in the "New Marina District" where many of the Island's most exclusive restaurants are located.
