New Jersey, in general, gets a pretty bad rap about being called The Garden State. I guess if I didn't know any better, and flew into Newark Airport, then drove down the NJ Turnpike, I might have the same opinion. But if people drive further west, they can discover the beautiful countryside and farms in Long Valley, like the Valley Shepherd Creamery. This farm has been nominated for one of The Garden State Culinary Arts Awards. Winners will be announced at the end of April.

The Creamery has tours of the farm and sheep shearing in the spring. They're known for their artisan cheeses, honey and jams. Take a ride, visit the Creamery and enjoy Long Valley for a day...or a lifetime!

Once a year, the Long Valley Woman's Club presents an annual show "Antiques in Long Valley". This year's event was on February 24. Always anticipated and always successful the show proceeds benefit the Long Valley Women's Club community outreach programs. They are an intricate part of the Long Valley Community. Each year they provide scholarships to the schools...among many other donations that benefit Long Valley. Thanks again Women's Club! You help make our town better and we thank you!

Hospitals are typically not the place you want to find yourself or your loved ones, unless a baby is being born! My daughter was born at Morristown Memorial Hospital 19 years ago! It was a great experience and I loved my doctor, the staff and the whole hospital! Living in Long Valley, Morristown Memorial is only 25 minutes away. How comforting to know that living here puts you so close to one of the top 1% of best hospitals in America!!!

Long Valley residents have anxiously been waiting for something to replace Mountain View Bar & Grill, which was a popular place to gather, but closed and has been vacant for more than six years! Across from Rock Spring Park, the location couldn't be more perfect! Many youth sports games and practices are held there. It's convenient for parents to grab a bite to eat while their children are at practice. It's also perfect to stop in after games when there's no time to. Washington Township library is also 'right there'.

Residents, commuters and 'out of towners' have a great place to stop...the best news is that there will be a drive through window!

You may have heard it already....because it's happened before! Washington Township (Morris County) also known as Long Valley, is one of the safest towns in America!! There are 27 New Jersey towns in the top 100. Long Valley is number five in the country...which makes us the number one safest town in NJ! So very proud to be a member of this community!

A favorite time of year for me is spring and that means it's time for the Long Valley Green Market! Located at the bottom of Schooley's Mountain Road, you'll find many vendors offering a plethora of foods from empanadas to pickles! There is always organically grown food from local farms and many other goods. You can take a walk on the Columbia Trail as it's right by the Green Market, which is open from spring to autumn, 3:00 to 700 p.m. Just one of the many events that Long Valley has to offer!

For two years in a row, Long Valley is named one of the safest towns in all of America. All I can say is wow! I've loved this town since my family moved here back in 1996! Just one more reason to be happy and proud to be part of this community! One of the top school systems in NJ and one of the safest towns in America. Add in the beauty of the town; loving it!

Well, what a treat and long overdue! What used to be a bank, is now transformed into "The Coffee Potter". It's located at 24 Schooley's Mountain Road. The Coffee Potter had only been open less than a week when I first stopped by. I arrived at 4:00 p.m. and the place was packed with friendly, happy customers. My friend and I shared a blueberry scone which was delicious, and had a cup of coffee and cappuccino. There is a lovely sitting area that faces the street, where you can meet with friends, family or business associates. Free WiFi and a pleasant atmosphere. One more thing: there's a drive through window for the convenience of moms with small children who can't easily run in and grab a quick cup. Dunkin' Donuts beware!

I love New Jersey, and I love Long Valley, where my family and I have lived for 20 years! New Jersey often gets a 'bad rap'. If you're just passing through, you most often see the NJ Turnpike and/or Newark Airport. There are many small towns in New Jersey with so much charm and character that you won't want to miss; and you may even want to plant your roots! Long Valley is one of those towns!

One of my favorite places for breakfast is the Schooley's Mountain Firehouse! Our fabulous volunteer fire department hosts a family style breakfast usually the first Sunday of the month in the spring, fall and early winter. The menu includes all you can eat eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice and baked goods. Best of all is the company! You never know what neighbor or friend you will run into; or what new friend you will make while dining. The Easter Bunny and Santa have been known to make an appearance, and there usually is an opportunity for the kids to climb on a fire truck. It's a great way to start the day and support our volunteers!

When my husband and I moved from Clifton, 20 years ago, my sister-in-law told me it will take awhile to get used to the difference in towns. That statement proved to be the furthest thing from how I felt. I immediately fell in love with the country side and beauty of the town I had never heard of. When I happened upon the General Store on Schooley's Mountain Road, I thought how charming this is! The fact that it is such a thriving business in our town is a true testament to the owners and how they attract customers with their great food, convenience and friendly workers. How wonderful to have this piece of history right in our town! I also love seeing the Pittsburgh Steeler's banner waving during football season; but don't judge them if you're not a fan.

One of the main reasons my husband and I moved to Long Valley almost 20 years ago, was for the excellent school system that we heard about. The last of our three children is a senior at West Morris Central, so I can tell you first hand that we certainly made the best decision by moving to Long Valley and having our children go through West Morris Central, as well as the grammar schools. It is wonderful to see the high school continue to be considered one of the best in the state. While going through the college search process, we came to find out that our high school is highly regarded by all colleges. Way to go Wolfpack!

In these days of high technology and easy access to everyone and everything, we really need to use extra caution and be smart when selling and purchasing items on the internet. Sites like Craigslist are great for buying and selling, but it is always risky. You never know who you are dealing with and unfortunately, there are always those looking to scam people and sometimes even worse....we've all heard horror stories. Long Valley now has a safe meeting place where transactions can be done. Police Headquarters has two parking spots marked "Safe Deal Zone".
    Great idea! Thanks Long Valley!

One of my favorite annual events in Long Valley is the Historical Society's annual Historical Homes Tour. This year the tour is on Saturday, December 10th. Between being a life long town resident and a realtor, I've seen a lot of homes in Long Valley.

However, each year I am amazed by the homes on the tour and the new facts I learn about my town. Every year there are several historic homes and a church on the tour. This year the tour will take visitors through six homes, the Pleasant Grove Cemetery and the Highlands Presbyterian Church, which will also be hosting a luncheon. All the homes are staffed with volunteers who give information about the homes. The Long Valley Garden Club creates beautiful arrangements for each home.

I always view the tour as a great opportunity to spend a day with my friends and kick off the holidays! The tour is from 11:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of the tour. For more information visit the Historical Society's website listed below.

It is important in any community to have a good relationship with the police department. Starting in December, Washington Township (Long Valley), will be joining the national program "Coffee with a Cop". Members of the Washington Township police department will meet with residents at the library every other month to discuss issues and learn more about each other.

The first meeting will take place on Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m. Chief Jeff Almer will be attending, while different officers or units will be present at the proceeding events. The 2017 meeting schedule is February 28, April 25 and June 27. Registration is limited to the first 10 people to sign up.

October is National Breast Caner Awareness Month. Dr. Ron Weiss will be speaking on October 15th and 19th at 1:00 p.m. at his Ethos Health location, 177 E. Mill Road, Long Valley. His talk will be about the prevention and treatment for breast cancer with food. This is a free event.

In August of 2014, Dr. Weiss launched New Jersey's first farm-based practice. Weiss bought his Long Valley farm five years ago with the intention of creating such a practice. The Ethos Health farm intends to show that it is not only the types of foods that are put in the body that affect health, but how foods are grown that make a difference .

Dr. Weiss offers services such as primary care physician, farm stand and cooking classes. Check out his website at http://www.myethoshealth.com

A friend added me to a group on Facebook today. It is called 'Long Valley Helping Hands'. It made me so happy and proud to be part of this caring community! Let me give you a summary of why it was created. Community members saw the need to use social media as a way to offer any type of assistance to those in need. It could be for help with picking up prescriptions when you have a sick child. Maybe you have an injury and need help with picking up groceries. There's help for carpooling kids, assistance with meals and more. The point is residents of Long Valley are part of a caring community that offers help when needed.

The weather at Rock Spring Park in Long Valley could not have been better on July 19th! This wonderful event, put together by so many organizations for the Long Valley community, was free of charge! There was a great turnout by the community.

The event included emergency services with fire trucks and ambulances plus a Jaws-of-Life drill. There was a helicopter visit, and the RE/MAX hot air balloon rides which collected donations for the local food pantry. Ort Farms donated watermelons and the use of their truck. Taylor Ice Cream of Chester donated ice cream among many other organizations supporting and hosting the fabulous community that I'm so happy to be a part of!

Driving through the Long Valley section of Washington Twp you are just drawn in to the beautiful rolling hills and meandering roads. You feel as if you stepped back in time. I recently stopped at a farm where they made local cheese, and it was delicious, can't wait to go back.

Earlier this year, Long Valley was named as the safest town in New Jersey. Now it is ranked as the 4th safest town in the USA! For an area 60 miles from New York City, that is quite a feat. You can live a short ride from New York City in a gorgeous town with the most preserved farm land in the state, that is the safest town in the state and the fourth safest in the nation. Raise your children here with peace of mind!

As if there weren't enough reasons to want to live in Long Valley/Washington Township, we were just rated fourth safest town in America...Yes, I said fourth in America according to safewise.com. The category is for towns with a population of over 10,000 residents. You have to contribute this to the community and police department who do a fabulous job keeping us all safe.

Although bald eagles are certainly not common in this area, low and behold, one was spotted by motorists driving on West Mill Road on September 18th! There are many treasured moments to experience in Long Valley. You just never know what you will see! So lucky to be part of this beautiful, safe countryside....Most people arriving at Newark Airport or driving on the turnpike have no idea about the hidden treasure of Long Valley! If they only knew.
