The weekend storm hammered the beaches and caused flooding all along LBI. Beach Haven and Long Beach Township deployed over 600 truckloads of sand to reinforce the eroded dunes. The beach replenishment will be starting soon and the beaches should be in good shape for the 2016 season.

Long Beach Island is known for the best swimming and exceptional white sandy beaches. You will notice that although food and beverages are allowed, at the end of the day your beach is clean because patrons respect the rules of throwing away trash and keeping it litter free. Between closing time and the next day the tides can bring in lots of seaweed and shells you wouldn't want to sit on top of. Each township, city and borough maintains its beach 12 months a year, but during the summer months the beaches are raked early every morning for a nice surface to put your towel down. Life guards begin every morning with a mandatory work out session that includes running and swimming exercises and they are on duty from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, 7 days a week during the season. Besides the ocean beaches, there are clean guarded bay beaches, many with playgrounds in most towns.

As a resident and a once business owner on the island, I pretty much know the ebb and flow of the quiet winters and the building excitement of the next season starting in the spring. By this time of the year I am hungry for the local eateries to start opening and I share the excitement of the great food available here. Where ever you live or stay on Long Beach Island, there is a good chance that you have been to some of the smaller family owned markets and cafes. For food to go, two of my favorite markets are located a few towns away from each other. On the North end of the island, in Harvey Cedars, is Neptune Market. This tiny gem hosts a smoothie bar, coffee and pastry bar a full service deli with fresh produce and groceries. It also has an old fashioned luncheonette complete with swivel seats where you can order your breakfast or lunch and watch the cook grill it up for you. Stop in for some freshly brewed coffee and stay for your scrambled eggs and bacon. Go to item: Fried Flounder sandwich. Catering available.
On the South side of the island , in Beach Haven, is Pearl Street Market. From your morning latte to your lobster dinner, this place has you covered. This upscale market offers artisan cheeses, freshly baked desserts, hard to find specialties and a deli with salads and sandwiches made to order. They also have a fresh fish and seafood department that will shuck clams and steam lobsters. Stop in for an iced Green Mountain Wild Blueberry coffee and order your shrimp cocktail platter for the weekend. Go to item: Classic Lobster Roll, voted best of the Jersey Shore 11 years in a row. Outdoor Seating. Catering available.
