Having grown up in Highland Park, I can tell you, it's a great place to live. It is a small town with great downtown shopping, parks, events, public transportation, and of course, amazing people.
It's a place where kids play outdoors, parents enjoy each other's company, many of whom also grew up in Highland Park and have remained lifetime friends. We are friends with each other, our former teachers, neighbors, co-workers and are on first name basis with our local business owners. The bond that is formed by Highland Park residents tends to last a lifetime and it's definitely a place where I am proud to have grown up.

Highland Park is a one square mile community.Throughout the 20th century, Highland Park's religious institutions, educational facilities, and municipal governance have kept pace with the growth of the town. The trends of local autonomy and control that shaped Highland Park in the past continue to this day. Highland Park is located between two county parks and along the Raritan River.

Join Main Street Highland Park for a day of fun starting with the 7th annual Run in the Park 5k. The course, closed to traffic during the race, heads downhill towards New Brunswick for a fast first mile. The race then winds its way through the historic streets of Highland Park before finishing on the high school track.
  • Highland Park, small in size, is just less than two square miles. But don’t let this quaint town fool you, it has a lot to offer. Bordering New Brunswick, Highland Park’s location gives a great oasis from the busy hustle and bustle of college life and it offers a short travel home from New York City. Being under an hour away from NYC, Highland Park is great spot to catch the NJ Transit Trains which are a convenient walk or a bike ride away.

Donaldson Park is a big part of Highland Park’s community featuring many sporting fields, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts and boat launch in to the Raritan River. Weekly farmers markets are held from mid-June to early November featuring New Jersey Fresh Produce and a variety of local food vendors.

Right across the river is Rutgers University, Saint Peter's Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Cancer Institute and The Children's Hospital as well as many great restaurants and night life. Highland Park itself also has a great downtown area and is a great neighborhood for families, commuters, and college students.

The Highland Park Public Library is truly a unique library. They host weekly events for all ages including toddlers, children, teens, and adults. The library is a great place not only to borrow a book, but also a place to get to know your neighbors! Another great aspect of the library is that it is located across the street from the Highland Park Public High School and Middle School. As school ends the library becomes flooded with students taking full advantage of what the library has to offer. The library has become a special gathering place which pulls together the town of Highland Park. Its central location allows people to take a short walk in order to enjoy books, events and a great atmosphere!

Highland Park has a unique comic book store on the main street. This store is one of many that contributes to the charm of the town. On Friday, there were people lined up and down the block waiting to buy tickets for Comic Con. This was the first time the store was selling tickets for Comic Con and people waited in line for hours attempting to purchase tickets. The store quickly sold out and eventually began turning away customers!

The store has cool different weekly events. If you enjoy comic books I would definitely recommend checking out The Fallout Shelter Comics & Games. It is located on the main street in Highland Park.

Every Friday, Highland Park hosts a farmers market on the main street from 11:00 am - 5:30 pm. I love going to it for many reasons. First off, it brings the entire community together. As I walk through the line of tents/booths I can spot people from many different ethnicities and religions. It amazes me that in a small town there can be such a wide variety of people living among each other! Another reason I enjoy going to the farmers market is because Highland Park is a walking community so I am able to walk from my office. As I walk in the direction of the market I join many different types of people coming together to support local farmers. Summer days at the farmers market reminds me of when I used to buy almost all of my produce from local farmers!

CJ from Melicks Town Farm told me - "I like everyone's mood when they come to the farmers market. It is an opportunity to take a break from all the hustle and bustle." The Farmers Market is not only a place for me to purchase delicious fruit and vegetables but is also a great way for me to support local farmers and be a part of the community!
