Our town takes its name from the New Jersey Central Railroad Station of the same name. The Station was built in 1874, the Township of Fanwood was set up in 1878 then divided into the current borough and Scotch Plains in 1895. The building is an example of Victorian Carpenter Gothic style. It gave workmen involved in its construction an opportunity to show off their skills and imagination at crafting scroll work with the newly perfected steam jig saw. The station is on the west bound side of the track because when it was built, it was primarily used by passengers bound for Pennsylvania and points west and not as a commuter route to New York City. Some say the the station was named after Fanny Wood, the daughter of a railroad official or a New York journalist depending on who's telling the tale. Whatever the historical accuracy, there is an annual Fanny Wood Day each Fall where a Miss Fanny Wood is chosen, She wears her bonnet to promote community spirit and good will among neighbors. Most commuters standing on the east bound platform each morning are more concerned with whether the train is on time than the history that faces them from across the tracks.
  • When my son was just a few years old we became members of The Highland Swim Club, one of several organizations such as the Willow Grove Club, the Jewish Community Center, and the YMCA offering swimming lessons and competitive programs. Learning to swim is a great idea for every child and a great summer activity for the family. My son swam in the summer league then progressed to the year round program at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. He made lifelong friends and swimming is still part of his life after college. The summer leagues are very inclusive, everyone who wants to participate can regardless of skill level. Watching a five year old splash through a 25 meter lap is a sight to treasure.
