The McCarter Pond in Fair Haven is a legacy of the prominent attorney Thomas Nesbitt McCarter who founded one of the oldest law firms in America now known as McCarter & English in Newark. He was attorney general of New Jersey and first president of one of the largest public utility companies in the U.S. He graduated from Princeton University in 1888 and attended Columbia Law School.

The pond is man made, and was originally built for ornamental and recreational purposes for the private state of the McCarter family in Rumson, bordering Buttonwood Lane in Fair Haven and Sycamore Lane in Rumson, with buttonwood trees that lined up both streets. The McCarter Pond is located on Fair Haven Road and its 3 ½ feet deep across its length. The pond is not only a very picturesque, but is an important multi-generational recreational tradition in the Borough of Fair Haven, used for fishing and the fishing derby in the spring, and ice skating and hockey games in the winter.

The area residents have formed a group called Friends of McCarter Pond, to help preserve the health and beauty of the pond.

    Fair Haven, NJ
Recently, in 2016, there was a large article in the APP showcasing the most desirable towns in NJ. Many were in Bergen County. We here in Fair Haven had the honor of being on this very short list. Time and time again we find ourselves at the top of many other noteworthy publications. Living and working here you could say I have a natural bias; but honestly we have had many opportunities to relocate back to NYC where I once lived, or West Field and Ridgewood for that matter. Why haven't we...or better yet, why haven't many if any of my clients returned?

Because on this Fair Haven, Rumson, Little Silver peninsula you get to have your cake and eat it too. We have the beach, plus what they have. Lush, green surroundings, parks, running trails, blue ribbon schools, outstanding community culture, multiple downtown's, commutable drive/train and high speed ferry into Manhattan. In short, we have it all and you get to throw in our gorgeous beach-line from Rumson to Spring Lake. My wife and seven-year-old daughter love it and I can help you to understand the area faster than most.
