I often pass over the Harlingen Road Bridge over Fox Brook during my day-to-day travels as a realtor. It never dawned on me to stop and take a trip back in time to understand how or when this bridge came about. On my way to an appointment, I decided to stop and take a look. This historic bridge has an interesting story to tell.

According to the Historical Marker Database (hmdb.org), the bridge was constructed and opened in October of 1890. The cost of this monumental piece of history was roughly $853! So how did this bridge come about? The Harlingen Village settled and prospered around the Reformed Church in the early 1750's. Historians suggest that Harlingen Village’s main road crossed over Fox Brook as early as 1811. Knowing a bridge is pertinent for an array of reasons, the village rendered the services of the New Jersey Steel and Iron Company in July of 1890 to replace the no longer structurally sound bridge that connected the area previously. Using steel stringers on existing stone, they added several sidewalks and some incredibly decorative railings to give it a stylish look. The bridge was finalized in October of that year.

In 2006, Somerset County decided to preserve the bridge by replacing it to keep it up to par, with refurbished decorative railings from 1890. Today, the bridge remains a staple of local history and is appreciated by locals and visitors alike. Next time you’re breezing through our area, Montgomery/Skillman/Harlingen/Dutchtown, take a drive past this bridge. There is something incredibly enriching about immersing yourself in history.
