Guest Blog: You Are an Ironmom
Here are some thoughts from one of our favorite moms. Enjoy — and happy Mother’s Day!
I am many things.
I am a mom, a wife, a business owner, a friend, a taxi service, a line cook (because my daughter says I’m far from a chef), a teacher, a speaker, a writer, a marketer, a consultant, an editor, an endorphin junkie, a dance gram giver and a lover of peanut butter.
But there is one more thing I’d like to become: An Ironman.
As a working mom, most days I find myself trying to catch my breath between homework with my kids, focusing on my business tasks and making trips to the grocery store. “Balancing” life can be exhausting, especially if you don’t have something fueling you.
I find the best way to fuel myself is with a passion-focused goal that ignites my fire from within and gives me the motivation to take on my daily balancing act in a fun, more positive way. So this year, I went BIG with my passion focused goal: I decided to train for Ironman Lake Tahoe. To me, swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running an entire marathon sounds totally exciting. But in order to get there, I have to train for 11 months, 6 days a week. I have to get up at 4:30 a.m. during the week to swim, bike and run for 3 hours before I start my workday. I have to train for 12 hours most weekends. I also have to take a lot of ice baths.
But I should be clear. When I say “I have to do” these things to reach my goal, what I really mean is “I get to.” I get to train to become an Ironman, because I am healthy and have the support of family and friends.
So I accept that I am many things. This September I hope to hear the words: “Nicole Nicolay, you are an Ironman.”
But for now, I am content that I get to keep training — I get to keep balancing it all — because in the end, I am an Ironmom.
