Emma Leigh Sledge Newton was born in 1899. Her Mother bought this property for her because Emma had lost her hearing at very young age. At that time, it was an understanding that a woman must marry to survive. Because of her lack of hearing her mother felt she would never marry. However, she did and had four children with him before he died three weeks before his last child was born. The house at 105 was built in the 1930's by Curtis and Susie Herston (one of Emma Leigh's daughter). The house was originally a four-room block house. The kitchen and bathroom and a third bedroom were added later. The house went thru major remodeling in 2003 and care was taken not to take away from the hardwood ceilings and floors that were apart of the original house. Emma Leigh's youngest granddaughter Judith Powell opened “The Emma Houseâ€, Catering and Party Room Rental, at this location and Sunday lunch was served along with catering and party room accomodations.
