ARCA RE/MAX Series
Hawkins Hustles to Win at Iowa Speedway
Rookie Matt Hawkins wasted no time asserting himself in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Hawkins, in his first series start, caught Matt Carter just in time, rubbed fenders just enough and cruised on to win the Prairie Meadows 250 on April 19 in Newton, Iowa.
The 20-year-old slipped underneath Carter through turns one and two with six laps to go to earn the victory.
"We came here to run up front and we did," Hawkins said. "When I got into Matt with about seven to go, I just lost the nose. It certainly wasn’t intentional, and I hope he knows that."
Carter finished fourth.
"The contact was really no big deal," Carter said. "He was faster than we were and would have passed us anyway. He apologized, so everything's fine."
Justin Allgaier, who led 83 laps, finished second followed by nine-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel, who charged from the 39th starting position to finish third. Eighteen-year-old rookie Jesse Smith, in only his second series start, rounded out the top five.
Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the Kansas Lottery $150 Grand at Kansas Speedway on April 25. The race airs on SPEED April 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
