The Long Island Museum at Stony Brook offers great entertainment and education for all. It's located in the historic district of Stony Brook, be sure to visit this museum of American Art, History, and Carriages. Children and adults alike will marvel at the collection of over 200 carriages, mostly of the horse-drawn variety!

The Carriage Museum elegantly tells the story of life in the 1800's before automobiles were invented. After your trip back in time in the Carriage Museum, be sure to explore the collection by the Hudson River School Painter, William Sidney Mount. There are also thousands of other paintings, sculptures and prints to explore before leaving this renowned museum and Smithsonian affiliate, right here on Long Island.

There's a lot going on on the North Shore of the island, in Stony Brook to be exact. If you take Stony Brook Road all the way up to North Country Road, you'll soon find yourself at the Stony Brook Village Center. There you will find many restaurants and shops, including some of the best ice cream around! This is home to Lake Side Emotions, Crazy Beans, and Latitude 121, where you'll find Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream.

While you're here, be sure to spend some time in the Avalon Park Reserve. You can walk trails of varying lengths and even bring your dog along for the work out. If you like a good scare, come back at night and visit Mary's Grave. There are many different stories and legends surrounding the site, one as creepy as the next. Some say that if you pull over to let another car pass you on the single lane road, your car won't start when you try to leave.

This is the perfect place to get some alone time, wander around the trails, get some ice cream, and watch the sun set.

Long Island has so many scenic places along the North Shore. I took a stroll along the duck pond at the Mill Pond in Stony Brook. This is a beautiful site at any time of the year. The pond is located across from the Stony Brook historic Grist Mill.
  • Harmony Vineyards held an outdoor art show on September 12, 2015. I love Harmony Vineyards! What a great way to spend the day and in the evening, take in the gorgeous Long Island Sunset.

A short walk from Stony Brook Harbor, hidden in plain sight, is one of Long Island's most beautiful parks. The Avalon Park and Preserve, an 84 acre property open to the community to celebrate the life of Paul Simons rises from the site of the old grist mill to cliffs overseeing the majestic town harbor.

The park and preserve have multiple and very well marked trails to offer miles of hiking, snowshoeing, xc-skiing through changing terrain and altitude. It is open daily from dawn to dusk, and welcomes dogs as long as they are kept on a leash.

For more information on Avalon or for maps of the trails, please visit their site at: http://www.avalonparkandpreserve.org/about-the-park/
