There's a wonderful art gallery close to the middle of the village that is often missed by visitors and even more so by locals! The John D. Barrow Art Gallery, at 49 East Genesee Street, just behind the Skaneateles Library, is an unusual art gallery in that it represents the work of only one artist, John D. Barrow. My favorite paintings are landscapes of the Skaneateles area. Some show features such as caverns along the west side and an island at the south end that are no longer visible because the water level is kept higher by the City of Syracuse in order to maximize the amount of drinking water available during the year.

The paintings give us a look back at the local landscape in the 1800's. The gallery, which houses more than 350 of his paintings, opened in 1900. The gallery is as beautiful as his paintings. There's not room in the gallery for all paintings to be on display at the same time so multiple visits are recommended. During the summer, the gallery is open Monday - Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can learn more (and get a sneak peek) at the website below.

If you've ever wanted to see an ice sculpture created, you're in luck! This Saturday, as part of the Winterfest, The Ice Farm will have a demonstration in Clift Park beginning at 12:00 pm. Last year's Winterfest weather was really cold - with blustering winds. This year's forecast looks better with a high of 35 for Saturday.

There will be a Winter Ice Walk created again this year and beginning Saturday morning, people will be able to see many sculptures throughout the village - all donated by local merchants. The sculptures are being created by world-famous ice sculptor Stan Kolonko and his crew at The Ice Farm.

With a polar bear plunge in the freezing cold Skaneateles Lake, the Ice Walk, an all-day scavenger hunt, taste of Skaneateles, a telling of the history of ice cutting on Skaneateles Lake at the Skaneateles Historical Society, whiskey tasting and more, it's bound to be a busy Saturday in the village. The event is organized by the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary.

The new trend in the area is the growing of hops on the western hills of the lake. I've added a photo of an acre of hops growing about nine miles down the lake. There's another field a mile further down the road. New crop - we will see how they fare.

One of the fun parts about working in the Village is meeting dogs. Our dog Dante is a Newfoundland who finds friends wherever he goes. At the office we keep a water bowl for our canine friends. Skaneateles Jewelers across the street have dog bones!

Doug's Fish Fry is an institution in the Village since the early 80s. Great food, takeout, and ice cream. Fresh peach sundaes now - blueberries and apples in season. I love the salmon served Tuesday through Thursday.
  • The gazebo in the heart of the Village is our iconic site. Everything happens there. High school graduation is held there, the community band plays there on Friday nights in the summer, and Christmas caroling is performed there during the Dickens celebration before the holidays.

Now is the time to enjoy it. Warm days, long strolls out onto the pier, that blue, blue lake.

One of my favorite ways of looking at Skaneateles Village is from West Lake Street. I've walked all my dogs there over the years....I love looking back on it. At night you would think you were in some exotic European city.
  • I remember growing up and swimming in Skaneateles Lake. The color of it impressed me even as a kid. That blue! And at the southern end almost a green...

We all were told that the lake was the purest in the country...well, maybe the second purest, but it always tasted great. I didn't know until much later that this was not always the case around the United States. Or that the plentifulness of it was rare, too. People drink the water right out of the lake! Most are now opting for UV lights, just in case...but it can be done, and still is.

It is the Queen of the Finger Lakes - "Where Presidents Vacation!"
