In Poughkeepsie, you will find the “Walkway over the Hudson”. This former railroad bridge that is over 6,700 feet long and sits 212 feet above the Hudson. It was converted to a pedestrian bridge and open to the public in October of 2009. Built in 1889 and used for freight trains, the bridge was destroyed by fire in 1974. Fire torched the railroad ties on the Poughkeepsie side, warping the rails. The bridge never carried another train.

The Walkway is the longest footbridge in the world. And it is part of the Hudson Valley Rail Trail which is a great place to walk, skate, and ride bikes. There are constantly events taking place on the walkway. People have gotten married, there have been attempts to break all sorts of different world records, just to name a few; Handshake Across the Hudson, Most People to Dance in a Chorus Line, and they set the world record for the Hokey Pokey, where 2,569 people danced the Hokey Pokey for more than five minutes.

Walk way over the Hudson is just another great reason to visit Dutchess County. It is also one of many reasons that Dutchess County is a great place to call home!
