The early days of Penfield began as a farming community with little groupings of homes, a church and a store. Roseland was one of these communities within Penfield.

It was natural for like-minded people to want to be near each other for safety and support. This community is located on Plank Road near the Monroe-Wayne County line. It was started in 1876 with a church, today known as the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and a store run by Otis Bancroft which had a post office in it from 1897 to 1900. Surrounding it on either sides of the road were homes built mostly by German descend farmers. The store has been long converted into living space but one can imagine how it provided a gathering place for the neighbors and a place to get supplies.

Take a ride out into the country on Plank Road and see it.

Corbett's Glen is a 17.7 acre nature park in Penfield/Brighton and even though it’s still a little chilly out, it makes for a beautiful stroll. As you walk there is a railroad track President Abraham Lincoln's funeral train passed along in 1865 on its way to Illinois and a historic tunnel that was constructed by the New York Central Railroad in 1882. If you follow along Allens Creek, it flows over three small waterfalls and you can even hike up the cliff next to the creek to watch the sunset. There are some wooded trails off Old Penfield Road which eventually lead you to "the glen" and they are just as pretty to walk along. This is one of Penfield's hidden gems that we are lucky to have. Years ago a company was trying to have it paved and used for an industrial park. It makes me appreciate it that much more knowing that!

Yes, it is definitely cold outside, but my dog doesn't seem to care that it’s below freezing temperatures. The dog park at Ellison is great this time of year because it is quiet, not crowded, plus everything is frozen, so typically my dog doesn't need a bath afterward either! There is a concrete section for small dogs, concrete section for medium to big dogs, and the large fenced-in park where the dogs can run around off their leash. To become a member, all you have to do is bring your dog’s license, rabies vaccination, and any other medical records to Parks and Recreation, pay the one year admission fee of $25 and you are all set! I strongly encourage all dog owners to take advantage of this little gem here in Penfield!

Penfield has a few places you can go sledding, but my favorite is Harris Hill across the street from Wegmans on 441. It’s a smaller hill, but it’s quiet and never crowded so you're able to go up and down on the hill as many times as you have the energy for. Plus we all know that going down the hill in your sled is the fun part, climbing up the hill dragging the sled behind you can be exhausting. So this smaller hill is perfect. You get all the fun and very little climbing involved. Sledding is one of those activities that is fun at any age and a great way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Did you know that a large part of the Town of Penfield has a Webster, NY mailing address? This is very confusing and there was an unsuccessful attempt some years ago to get that changed, but the US Postal Service said no! Often times I tell people about Baytowne Plaza and everyone thinks it is in Webster. Some even believe it's in the town of Irondequoit, but it's in Penfield. So, if you are looking at a real estate listing and it says Penfield but has a Webster mailing address or zip code it isn't likely to be a typo. Oh, by the way, it gets even more confusing when you realize that some of Penfield is also in the Rochester, NY 14625 and the Fairport, NY 14450 zip code areas. If that isn't enough, the school district boundaries do not follow the municipal boundaries either! Ugh! Contact me if you need help.

Bauman’s is a local farmers market located at Five Mile Line and Plank Road. It’s widely known in Monroe County for having a huge flower selection in their greenhouse during the spring/ summer time and “pick your own” strawberries and peas.

During the winter season they have a wide selection of Christmas trees. You can choose the “cut-it-yourself’ tree which is a whole lot of fun for the kids, or the pre-cut tree for those of us who don't want to get dirty. The produce is always fresh and decently priced, but the real show stopper is the fried cakes from the bakery.

Originally opened in Naples Florida in 1985, Lindburgers Restaurant moved to the Wegmans Penfield Plaza 15 years ago where it’s been thriving ever since. They are known for having a selection of 50 gourmet burgers, but don't let that fool you, they are much more than a burger joint! The menu has amazing appetizers like the Ultimate Nachos (which is big enough to feed four people), delicious salads, soups and sandwiches, and on Fridays a Yuengling battered fish fry! Their draft beer selection is pretty impressive with choices like Edmond Fitzgerald Porter and The Kind IPA. The couple that owns the restaurant also do the cooking and the staff is super friendly which is why it’s a true family restaurant.

The stand of oaks which gave Oakwood its name is now gone. Now, in a prominent spot there is the circle of white birch trees at the turn of the main drive. The earliest known grave at Oakwood was for Dr. Dake, the first village physician, who is said to be buried here but no tombstone remains. The tombstone of John Strowger (once a miller in Penfield) is the oldest marked grave, dating back to September 8, 1812 on lot 648.

The first section of the Oakwood Cemetery was an acre of land on Baird Road acquired from Nathan Fisk. In 1889, the Oakwood Cemetery Association was incorporated and an additional 16 acres were purchased. This is a beautiful, historic cemetery to visit.

One of the local gems is Panorama Plaza, located in an area that used to be called "The Flats", which features a mix of small local businesses and larger big box retailers. My parents refrigerator stopped working on last Wednesday and the guys at the Panorama Sears Hometown Store delivered and installed a new one in less than 24 hours. Not exceptional you say? Well they delivered on a day when they normally do not schedule delivery. The delivery crew was unavailable so the owner of the store and one of his salesmen put it in his pick up and brought it over. We couldn't be happier with the service and it is reflective of all the businesses in the plaza. Its nice to have the big malls and the larger retailers just a short, few minutes drive away, but its also nice to shop local from local people.

Penfield started as a farming community and has maintained that feel with wide open farm fields and farm markets throughout the town. It is a great place to live.

Every morning when I drive to the gym, usually around 4:45 a.m. it is still dark out. I am amazed at the wildlife that shares the early day with me. Fox, deer, raccoon and the occasional woodchuck. We have an abundance of open spaces, woods and waterways which make wonderful natural habitats for our furry friends.

Right around the corner from the Greenwood Park I wrote about...within walking and biking distance...is a favorite summer hangout....the ice cream shop at the Rochester Garden Center on Qualthrough at Embury. Kids love the bright colored picnic tables and the wagon to sit and eat their ice cream.

Greenwood Park reminds me of the Brady Bunch TV Show. Why? I always loved how the kids just hopped on their bikes and went to play with their friends at a nearby park. Well. I live in the Bridle Path Subdivision in Penfield NY (with Webster Schools) and my kids get to have that freedom and fun! My family enjoys playing at the basketball court, tennis courts and playground; there is even room to play baseball and soccer!

Sitting at the corner of Scribner Rd and Embury Road, this park is accessible by walking trails and sidewalks from many neighborhoods. The weather is beautiful and the park is filled with kids and their parents...laughing and getting some old fashioned exercise!

Best way to finish off the day.....with some ice cream at Maxies! It is located at the corner of Embury and Scribner Rd and surrounded by neighborhoods. It is a great place to hang out with your friends!

So if you are not at the Penfield Four Corners and want some frozen yogurt, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt is a great place too! Great flavors, toppings, plenty of seating and yummy!

Yotini's Frozen Yogurt Bar opened last year at the Penfield Four Corners and I must say, it is a frequent stop for my family and I. Last time I was there I had a cup of sugar free vanilla with slivered, salted almonds. Delish! My son, two yogurt flavors, bubble gum and strawberry I think, topped with chocolate chips, an assortment of sprinkles, gummie bears, peanuts and who knows what else. So, after the Little League game tonight we might just have to grab a Yotini treat on the way home!

I have been a resident of Penfield for 44 years and cannot imagine living anywhere else! A progressive community with great schools, public and private recreation facilities, shopping areas and so much more. One of my favorite community activities is the 4th of July firework display. Check it out!
