Residents of New Windsor are lucky enough to share their neighborhood with some historic figures from the Revolutionary past. As the Fourth of July approaches, the New Windsor Cantonment National Historic site offers locals and tourists alike a living lesson from 18th Century America and a reminder of just how critical the area was to the nation’s independence. The 167-acre site on Temple Hill Road (Route 300) was part of the final camp of George Washington and his northern army of minutemen along with their families and refugees – nearly 8,000 people spread across 1,500 acres -- from October 1782 to April 1783. It was from here that General Washington ordered his army to cease fire for the final time.

Today, regularly scheduled re-enactments of colonial life, along with musket and cannon demonstrations, give the locals a feel for what it was like to live in Revolutionary New Windsor. In 2006, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor was established in the park, marking the location where Washington ordered its commission in 1782. A Saturday visit to the cantonment and museum can be combined with a couple of other nearby attractions for an afternoon of family fun. Members of the local “Saturday Night Cruisers” Car Club display their classic autos – free for everyone to see -- every Saturday at the parking lot of the Price Chopper supermarket about a mile south of the cantonment on Route 300. After admiring the metallic beauties, it should be dinner time, and luckily Brother’s Barbecue is only a mile or so away, further south. Along with its famous, mouth-watering North Carolina style fare, Brother’s has lately become a showcase for live music, especially blues performances. In a trip of a few miles, the lucky visitor can experience the best of “Washington,” Detroit and North Carolina!

Eggert, the talking egg, is a holiday fixture at Devitts Nursery in New Windsor. For years, my husband and I would take our three small children to Devitts to see Eggbert. They would walk through the animated holiday display to visit with Eggbert at the end. There he would greet them by name, talk with them about Christmas, and take a holiday photo. Now more than 20 years later, I had the opportunity to visit Eggbert again - this time with my 3-year-old granddaughter. While we were there, she took a photo with Anna and Elsa from Disney's Frozen, talked with Santa, and followed that same path to Eggbert as her father did many years earlier. What a special feeling to share this holiday tradition with my son and his daughter!

Kristi Babcock Memorial Park, formerly known as Mt. Airy Sports Park, is a great Town of New Windsor Recreation Department Public Park. Located on Mt Airy Road, near the Cornwall Central High Schools, the complex features soccer and football fields, separate softball and baseball fields, a playground and covered concession area. There are scoreboards, plenty of parking, and the fields even have lights. My children play baseball and soccer at this facility year round. This is a great place to bring the entire family!

Our family recently visited the Storm King Art Center. This is one of my favorite places to take friends and family when they come to visit us. On our last visit to the Art Center, new art was being exhibited with the landscape all the way from China!

Storm King Art Center ties in the art with the landscape which makes for an exhilarating outdoor exhibit experience. We took our 11 and 13 year-old boys and needless to say, being outdoors made the experience far more enjoyable for them rather being indoors.
