Irondequoit Bay has a rich history going back to the Seneca Indians that lived around the Bay and were part of the Five Nations of the Iroquois. The Bay provided for most of their needs with fresh water, fish, fowl, deer and other things. In the late 1600's, the French explorers and missionaries came into the Bay and camped at the south end which they named LaSalle Landing. Today there is a parking lot at the landing and a plaque memorializing the site. People come frequently to fish and feed the Canadian geese. From this location in the 1700's the French military conducted several outings to subdue the Indians. They were followed by the English and then settlers.

The 1800's saw Irondequoit Bay become a flourishing place for fisherman, water enthusiasts, campers and vacationers with several resorts. Today the Bay is surrounded by parks and single family homes on the east and west banks with marinas at the north and south ends. Winter time sees ice fisherman dotting the Bay with their little huts on the ice. And just recently, a huge residential complex is being built at the south end called SouthPointe Cove.

Sutter's Marina offers a boat launch and dock space for motor boats. The bay offers a nice alternative when the waters of Ontario are too choppy. Smaller boats do well on the bay. You will also find jet skis, kayaks and people water skiing. Along the shore there's always fishing going on and in the winter ice fishing.
