For the 19th holiday season in a row, the George Eastman House is featuring an awesome display of incredibly decorated gingerbread houses. Some of the creations were developed by professional bakers, while others were done as community projects. They will all be sold by silent auction at the end of the exhibit, on December 17th.

In addition, there is a collection of decorated tabletop Christmas Trees that are also on display and available for purchase in a silent auction. The George Eastman House is the perfect spot to find your holiday spirit.

When George Eastman built his huge home on East Avenue, it was on the edge of the developed area of the City of Rochester. Everything to the east was country and woods, but as time went on, the City moved eastward!

Many wealthy homeowners on East Avenue and the City bought a lot in the Seabreeze area and built a summer cottage to get away from the city for the weekend and fresh air of Lake Ontario.

Salenas in Village Gate is delicious. It is located in the old Fabrics and Findings buildings and has covered outdoor seating so rain or shine there are plenty of seats. The Enchiladas, Burritos and homemade salsa are spicy with my favorite being the Chipotle Chicken. It also is walking distance to the Memorial Art Gallery....great spot with good service and cold beer not to mention the Margharitas! Enjoy.

Visiting the George Eastman House on East Avenue in Rochester is definitely a step back in time. It took three years to build the 50-room mansion and was completed in 1905. The 35,000 square foot building is made of reinforced concrete, making the structure fireproof. It sat on a large lot, nearly 13 acres, with a working farm, greenhouses, barns, pastures and formal gardens. Today, 900 East Avenue is the heart of Rochester's cultural district.

The house was built with 13 bathrooms and nine fireplaces and is still furnished with some of the original furniture. A tour of the restored house gives lots of insight to the complex and lavish lifestyle of George Eastman. The foyer features a grand elegant staircase and the conservatory houses an elephant head. The foyer boast bright white marble while the billiards room has dark paneling. The house features classical decorative craftsmanship, as well as extremely modern conveniences of the time, such as an elevator, electrical generator and even an internal telephone system.

Today, the George Eastman House is officially called the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. When Eastman died in 1932, his estate was bequeathed to the University of Rochester. For ten years, it served as a home for the University's presidents, before it was transferred to a board of trustees. It was named a national landmark in 1966. It is the world's oldest photography museum with world-renowned collections of both still and motion photography.

The Eastman House is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and there is an admission fee. Many of the formal gardens are open to the public seven days a week without a fee.

If you're looking for a sophisticated establishment with a delightful ambiance, look no further than City Grill on East Ave. Not only is the food top notch, the service and the beautiful atmosphere can't be beat. I recently had lunch at City Grill and it was as good of an experience as ever. I ordered the Wood Fired Half Chicken with mac and cheese - delicious! The chicken was very flavorful and the white cheddar mac and cheese was a unique spin on this classic dish. My lunch companion had the Wild Mushroom Pizza with 4 different types of mushrooms in a truffle sauce. She was just as pleased with her dish as I was with mine. In the past, I have tried the Roasted Beet Salad topped with almonds and goat cheese and tossed with red shallot vinaigrette. This blend of flavors is marvelous and something I would order time and time again. Whether you want to host a celebration, hold a business lunch, or simply have a nice meal, City Grill is an ideal restaurant to choose!
