On a busy Memorial Day concerned patrons found baby geese stranded under a parked car in the crowded parking lot of a local gas station. Seven patrons navigated how to strategically remove vehicles and safely save the baby geese from injury. Once captured in a milk crate, a consensus of where to release them in hopes of their best chance of survival was Rings Pond. The Cornwall and Cornwall on Hudson residents relocated the babies and watched as they happily swam into the water. This community is never too busy go take care of its wildlife.

Cornwall and Cornwall on Hudson are no stranger to tradition. The holiday season begins with the Cornwall Garden Club decorating the grassy area in the traffic circle. Local residents join together to decorate our streets of Cornwall with flowers, shrubbery, and manicured green spaces all year round. Shop owners on Main Street line the quaint town with Christmas trees and white lights. The amount of pride and passion to this project and community is evident in the beautiful festive decor when entering the town. The smell of pine and warm cider is in the air as caroling commences at the two separate tree lightings in Cornwall and Cornwall on Hudson. The trees illuminations are a reminder of the holiday and our glowing community. The season comes to a close with the New Year’s Eve ball drop. Who needs to stand in the crowded streets of Time Square when you can join your fellow Cornwall residents at Village Square on New Year’s Eve?

The Storm King Theater former owner originated the idea of a ball drop several years ago and I think I can speak for everyone in our community that it is now a tradition all ages look forward to year after year. At 11:00 pm, the live music at the gazebo starts to ring through the streets as the younger crowd is bundled in warm hats and mitts as they are perplexed by the magic show. Folks embrace in excitement and celebration as they recognize old and new friends in the sea of people. It is a tradition that brings joy to the entire town and I can't think of a better way or place to ring in the New Year!

'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house not a creature is stirring, except for the Scouts. It's the giving time of year. The time of giving and the time for building a "Pine Wood Derby Car", that is! Yes, that is correct, the local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts troops receive their official derby car kits in mid-December. They will envision, like NASA engineers, what will make their car the fastest and look the coolest, of course. Will the traditional wedge shape work? Or should we build something completely innovative? This is important business as the official Pine Wood Derby is soon after the New Year. Wheels will need to be greased and smoothed down to prevent friction. The center of gravity and maximum weight must be precisely executed. After all, the Pine Wood Derby is something the local Scouting community looks forward to all year. It is traditionally held at the New York Military Academy gymnasium in late January. Some say it's the most important race a "Scout Dad" will ever win! I particularly like to root for the cars that obviously had the maximum participation in building by the Scout himself.

Although Cornwall-on-Hudson is a small village (only two square miles), when it comes to dining out, there is something for everyone. Village Pizza (my grand-daughters favorite) has great pizza and subs. Hudson Street Cafe is my personal favorite for breakfast or lunch. The River Bank Bistro is perfect for a small intimate dinner. The Trestle (my son's favorite) is a great place to meet up with friends, watch a game and have a beer. Painters is an inn, a restaurant, and an art gallery with a very eclectic menu. 2 Alice's (my two daughter's favorite) has great coffee, free Wi-Fi, karaoke nights, and local bands; this is the new "hot spot". The Rock Wall Pub & Grub - stop by on Thursdays nights for the best wings in town. Why not try one of these great spots? Just may become one of your personal favorites!

There is no better hair salon in the Hudson valley. Cornwall on Hudson Stylist Chair has been voted best salon in the Hudson valley for several years in a row for a reason. Getting my hair done there is a like a day in a spa. I love catching up with the other patrons and stylists and I never have to worry about how my hair will turn out because they get it right every time. Consistency and current issues of people and tabloids make it a wonderful retreat where you come out looking beautiful.

It was a beautiful evening for a fair! The Cornwall on Hudson Fireman's Fair is fun for all ages. In Cornwall and Cornwall on Hudson it’s an event that the kids love and the adults look forward to when the busy days of summer and lack of school events mean we have missed seeing familiar faces on a day to day basis. The local camps already took advantage of the day time fair hours on Thursday. However, that only makes the campers want to go back with their families when the lights of the Ferris wheel glow through the night sky and the aroma of sausage, peppers and onions, and sweet smells of cotton candy make them succumb to the decadent treats. Tonight's perfect weather made hours of laughing with old and new friends while watching the children play games of chance, and run from ride to ride, seem like only minutes. It is an event in a small town that makes huge memories year after year! Tomorrow night’s fair will go out with a bang when this welcomed tradition in our community ends the festivities of the fair with a display of fireworks.

If you are like me, coffee is a very important part of my day. I love 2 Alices Coffee Lounge on Hudson Street. It a great small town coffee lounge where you can pull out your laptop and relax on a couch. Definitely a place to check out. Indoor and outdoor seating.
  • Our family loves to eat at Painter's in the heart of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. It's casual dining and has a great family atmosphere. You can either sit outside in a cafe seating setting or stay in. We love to sit outside on Tuesday night so we can hear the live band playing in the Gazebo down the street. The food is delicious and not expensive. From burgers to more sophisticated entrees, there is enough variety to please the entire family. There’s a good wine selection which is reasonably priced as well. By the way, the reason it's named Painter's is because of the art displayed on the walls which is also for sale by local artists.
