    Beacon, NY
When I was a kid my godfather use to take me on what was then the “Worlds Steepest Incline Railway” which ran up Mount Beacon. It really was a spectacular ride up, and back in it hay day from what I was told there used to be a casino and night club at the top of the mountain, which has burned down long before my time! The incline fell into disrepair but functioned periodically until 1983 when it was destroyed by fire. The tracks still remain and the Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society is working to return the ride back to its former glory.

Today Mount Beacon can be hiked up to the top along trails and can provide quite the workout! The hike begins on a staircase following the course of the Beacon Incline Railway. Once at the top one can see the majestic Hudson River, almost the entire Hudson Valley, and there is a trail that leads to a monument commemorating a signal fire built atop the mountain during the Revolutionary War. And about a mile from the summit there is the newly restored Mount Beacon fire tower, where on a clear day you can see New York City to the south, and Albany to the north.

As with most local area attractions you tend to forget they are there or just take them for granted…which really is sad, people come from all over to see this mountain. Think we will have to plan a family hike very soon….See you at the top!
