Since 1699, a cottonwood tree has been standing in the heart of the Town of Newburgh. The Balmville Tree, which grows in the Hamlet of Balmville, stands 83 ft. tall, making it the tallest (and oldest) cottonwood in the Eastern United States. The tree is a testament to the life and times of Newburgh and its parade of colorful residents. Local lore has it that the tree sprung to life in 1782 when George Washington, who was encamped in Newburgh with the Continental Army, pushed his riding crop into the ground. The tree was originally thought to be a Balm of Gilead tree, a misnomer which nonetheless gave the hamlet of Balmville its name. In the 1950’s researchers took core samples from the giant cottonwood and concluded that it sprouted around 1699, well before George Washington, the American Revolution and Newburgh itself. Over the years the tree became a beloved monument to the people of the town. Franklin Delano Roosevelt would often stop his car at the base of the tree to admire it while traveling to visit relatives. Today, the tree is thriving as well as any other 300-year old living thing. Neighbors have even succeeded in planting new shoots from the tree in attempts to create new generations of the Balmville Tree
