I learned to ski here when I was a teenager. I can remember coming from Brooklyn on the bus when I was fourteen years of age with all the guys and girls from my neighborhood. I knew I would live here one day.

Last Thursday, after no snow for this winter, my buddy and I decided to hit the mountain for our ski fix. We go to the mountain early in the morning, so we can get there before the boarders arrive. There was no one there except my friend Bill and I and a few other skiers. We were delighted; the snow was man made but the "powers that be" had provided some nice base for us to enjoy our day. There were a few icy patches from being run off from the boarders but otherwise it was a great time.

Sometimes on the mountain top you can stop for a moment and experience pure silence along with magnificent views of the surrounding towns and NYC. Always when this old man first starts skiing for the year, I get a little creaky and the the skis seem to have a mind of their own. They just seem to want to go in different directions. This keeps me really paying attention as I don't want to kill myself!

After a while the beauty of the sport returns to me and the grace it gives again becomes my friend and like surfing, the mountain and I become one. It is a most satisfying experience that give life a true "raison d'etre" that stays with you. The feeling is almost addictive; you want to feel it again and again.

This weeks past storm was incredible I wanted to ski on the Sunday after but my own wife had something else to say about having to "plow me out". The business week is upon us and this morning I called my ski buddy for this coming Thursday early morning. The sun is going to be out and the snow should be great. Pretty soon I might be or am getting close to being one of the the oldest men skiing this mountain. That includes my ski buddy. Life is glorious that I can still do this. The best part of all is that the mountain is 20 minutes away from my house. I love my lifestyle in Northwest New Jersey. We have it all and it is not crowded at all. I can boat, fish, hunt, play tennis, golf, ski and ride horses.

When I commuted to the city, I remember arriving at exit 34B and my whole sense of being would change - like I just returned "home" to this beautiful place I call home and the pressure went away. The best part today, no commute. I work local and life is beautiful!

Do you remember Hidden Valley Ski area? It was always the "poor cousin" to the Vernon Valley/Mountain Creek slopes and sadly could no longer compete. After being closed for a few years, and an unsuccessful auction (or two), it appeared that it would remain shuttered for years to come.

Imagine the surprise of us locals when we first saw the new banner a few weeks ago: "National Winter Activity Center". It all happened very quietly, no real fanfare! The Advertiser North printed an article about Schone Malliet, who's experience is the financial industry but says that his organization will extensively partner with local community organizations. Examples are YMCA's, Boys and Girls clubs, schools, churches and youth groups that are in a 70 mile radius of Vernon. See the link below for the full story.

Thank you Schone Malliet, you are helping to introduce the beauty of winter sports, and hopefully all season sports, in the near future to not just the great outdoors, but to Sussex County and all the wondrous activities we offer. Be sure to get these kids out on the trail (Appalachian Trail) soon too!

Well, there may be no snow on your front lawn, but the slopes are covered. The past few days and nights have given Mountain Creek the perfect temperatures for making snow and those guns have been blowing almost 24 hours a day. So if you are a skier or snowboarder, come on up and enjoy the slopes. Happy Holidays to all. See you in 2015!

I have heard them blowing snow for the past few days, but I didn't think they were really open for skiing. To my surprise, there they were this morning, skiing at the main slopes (South end closed today) and the sledding park is open too. Great time to try it all out, as not crowded and it is on the warmer side today - 38 degrees when I passed the slopes. So come ski Mountain Creek at Vernon.

The season has begun! Mountain Creek began testing their snow guns today. The temperatures are unseasonably cold, only 23 here today, so it won't be long before all the guns are working 24/7. Pre-season passes are still available and there are even special passes for the "locals". Did you realize that when we have one of those work-closing snow storms, the locals are right here to enjoy the slopes?

Did you know that Route 515, which connects Route 23 thru Hardyston and Vernon to New York State, has earned the designation of Scenic Byway? Think about it, driving on a Scenic Byway everyday to work, the mall or just driving along. Route 515 is locally referred to as the Crown Jewel of the Highlands Act, as much of it is watershed property therefore, heavily protected over many years.

The link below, is an article from our local paper along with a map of the Scenic Byway’s path. So, whether you are coming up for some apple picking or to see our fall colors, take note of the Byway and enjoy every turn.

For those of you who have thought that Sussex County and Vernon Township are simply country living at it's finest - you would be only partially correct. Sussex County, Hardyston to be exact, boasts the Restaurant Latour. Latour offers their guests a dining experience not to be matched in the County (at least not that I know of yet). See the NY Times review linked below and you will see it isn't simply my opinion. So yes, we do all enjoy our life in the country, but we also enjoy the finer things of life too. Come enjoy some fine dining for yourself and let me know what you think!

Green Valley farm stand in Vernon, on Route 94, offers natural beef and pork products. They also sell fruits and veggies, pies, breads, preserves and eggs plus their homemade ice cream. The farm itself is located in Wantage at 997 Route 23 North. Stop in either location for the freshest produce around. The sweet corn is incredible! Oh, and don't forget the Annual Rodeo September 6th, starting at 11:00 am.

Once again Mountain Creek aka Action Park will host the Tri-State Spartan Race the first weekend of September. The Spartan Races bring people from all over the country. I was surprised to see how widespread these races really are. Now, while I will not be a participant, I will be there to watch parts of it. Let me know if you are planning on becoming a participant, I do need someone to root for! Good Luck!

Still time to register for the 5K Run one mile walk on June 8th at Maple Grange Park. It is one of our favorite places to walk all year long.

Great way to start off the day with family, friends or just a little time for yourself. I personally walk the 1.2 mile path at least three times a week and love it. A nice interlude in the day.
If you aren't from the area, and would consider spending the day, bring a picnic lunch and after enjoying Maple Grange, drive about one mile and you will come to the Appalachian Trail, which runs right thru Vernon. Come spend the day. I may see you there.

Two storms in one week may not be for everyone, but here in Vernon/Hardyston we are enjoying every flake (so far).

Here is a little note from Crystal Springs' Spa and Mountain Creek following yesterday's storm:
"We just received another 8 inches of snow this morning, for a total of a foot and a half of snow since Monday! Now is the perfect time to come up and enjoy all of our winter activities like snow tubing, skiing, and swimming in one of our heated outdoor pools!"

So what are you waiting for. Come for a short vacation, fall in love with what we have to offer and stay all year long. Golf is just around the corner too.
