The map outline of Scotch Plains always reminds me of a bow tie slightly askew standing on its end. The northern end is the historic shopping area. The Stage House Inn, built in 1737, is located on the corner of Park and Front streets. Long ago, travelers on the Swift Sure Stagecoach route would rest overnight on the way west. Now, it is a fine dining restaurant with noted Chef David Drake, formerly of the Frog and Peach, serving French inspired cuisine. The lively watering hole and night spot, The Tavern, is just next door with a menu that ranges from a turkey club to grilled salmon with asparagus. John's Meat Market is a classic father/son butcher shop that sells Grade A prime meats since 1939. The staff is courteous and always gives helpful tips on cooking time and temperature. Florence Ravioli is a local institution. They make a double long ravioli with cheese or spinach fresh daily, packed by the dozen in flat cardboard boxes and tied with twine. They have fresh loaf breads and all the Italian specialties including my favorite, shooters hot peppers stuffed with prosciutto and cheese.
