River Edge Area Insight

  • I recently participated in the 2015 Polar Plunge which was organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. This event took place on January 11, 2015 in Long Branch, with other supporters for a good cause.

I participated in support of two families from my hometown of River Edge. The first was for Luke Abbadessa, a two-year old boy who was recently diagnosed with a childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. His parents Vanessa and Daniel were unable to return to their teaching positions this year in the West New York School System, in order to care for their son.

The second was Katherine Taveras, a 45 year-old woman who was diagnosed in 2014 with Stage III Pancreatic Cancer. Between 2005 and 2008 Katherine’s son Leandro fought Leukemia and is now a freshman in college. Katherine is now in a terrible fight for her own life.

The Polar Plunge is an important fundraising event. The families benefit greatly from the community participation. Funds will be used for loss of income, medical expenses and care, travel expenses and out-of-pocket deductibles.

River Edge residents, lets not forget to celebrate Veterans Day tomorrow in Memorial Park at 10:00 am. It is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.
  • As the weather outside continues to remind us, summer is in the past. You may be considering some repairs around the house to prepare it for the cold months of winter. On that note, I've compiled a list of fall maintenance ideas to help you get started!

Hot-water heating system: Lubricate pump and motor, bleed air from radiators or convectors

Forced warm-air heating system: Vacuum heat exchange surfaces; clean and lubricate blower blades and motor; check fan belt tension and adjust if necessary
