Oradell Public Library is a very special place, and a hub of our community. The number and variety of programs offered is amazing. The staff is friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. The resources are incredible and especially when coupled with the Bergen County Cooperative Library System that allows you to request a book or other materials from all the other libraries in the system and have it sent to your home library. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and you can feel comfortable pulling up a seat and spending time there.

And now the library is letting you know on your receipt how much money you save by borrowing books rather than buying them! This is a neat, new service that our library is offering. So pay attention the next time you go; and read the receipt. It's an eye-opener!

Our Oradell Police Department is always on board with help for the Annual PBA Toy Drive. Folks can drop toys by our police station right through December 20th and the toys will be distributed to children who might otherwise go without. The mobile electronic sign is a happy reminder of their dedication to this worthy cause. The PBA Drive is also an easy way for other local charities to help with gift collection. The local Oradell/Emerson Rotary Club jumped on the bandwagon and had members and guests bring toys to their annual holiday party which were then transported to the police station.

With the number of wooded areas in our two square miles here in Oradell, it's no wonder deer are a common site. Whether making their way from Lotus woods to the wooded area around the Hackensack Country Club, or from the beautiful reservoir to the woods surrounding the White Beeches Golf and Country Club, you can spot them "migrating" across your front lawn most noticeably at dawn and dusk.

New Jersey Family Magazine has voted Oradell the Number 1 town in New Jersey for families! This is not surprising to us as it has been number 1 to our family for 12 years now. Oradell offers a wonderful community atmosphere, great commute to Manhattan with bus and train service, a quaint downtown, super library, wonderful recreation program, beautiful reservoir, and terrific schools. All of this combines to make Oradell a wonderful place to live!

Deer wander through the Blauvelt section of Oradell as they journey from the Lotus Woods, south of Soldier Hill Road, to the woods surrounding the golf course and Hackensack Golf Club. The snow seems to make them more visible. A beautiful sight.

The event will take place on October 18, from 1:00-5:00 pm on Memorial Field and Prospect Avenue between Oradell Avenue and Park Avenue. New Jersey Family Magazine rates Oradell as the best town in Bergen County for families and we could have told you that! The April edition of the magazine notes that Oradell boasts top schools and super commuting options - a short drive to Manhattan or a train or bus.

There are also nifty stores in town like Cool Beans, a coffee house and local gathering place. Recreation facilities are also top notch with places like the Doug Parcels Athletic Compound (yes, Bill's brother and a resident) heading the list. It's a great place to live. Thanks for recognizing that, New Jersey Family Magazine!

A very special place that most out-of-towners to Oradell don't know about is the "Picnic Grove". There is a recreation complex just across the street from the elementary school which includes basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer and baseball fields and a children's playground. Just behind this complex is a stretch of woods with a lovely little clearing that we affectionately call the Picnic Grove.

After the 4th of July parade, you can wander into the grove and enjoy a cold beer from the beer truck. The grove is also the site for the Volunteer Picnic - an event to celebrate all those who volunteer in town - whether coaching, serving on a committee or doing some type of community service.

We affectionately started calling Oradell our "Mayberry RFD" since moving here almost eleven years ago. One fabulous throwback to our childhood are the two lighted ice skating ponds in town. They are open to residents whenever conditions are safe. There is a little "YES" sign near the entrance when it's safe to skate or residents can call (201) 261-4231 for daily updates. Skating pond hours: Weekdays: 3:30 pm to 9:00 pm; Saturday: 12:00 am to 9:00 pm; Sunday: 12:00-9:00 pm.

The Blauvelt Art Museum is one of Oradell's best kept secrets. It welcomes visitors Wednesday-Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Hiram Blauvelt was a philanthropist and conservationist who left the museum as part of his legacy. As their website tells us, Blauvelt hoped to "promote the cultural value of wildlife art and the need for conservation of its subjects and their habitats" and he did this by donating his vast art collection and big game trophies.

The museum is housed in a re-furbished carriage house built in 1893 and is in itself interesting. The curator is often on hand to guide you through the changing wildlife art exhibits. If you look up at the distinctive mansion located on Kinderkamack Road, the museum is just to the right. Make it a point and don't miss out on this very special place.

The Oradell Swim Club is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a hot summer day. Located on Ridgewood Avenue in Oradell, the club is set on four manicured acres and features four pools - the main pool, the intermediate pool, the kiddie pool and the lap pool. There's a snack bar, changing rooms, showers, picnic area and a terrific staff. Stop by for a tour!

It is such a pleasure to find such a terrific veterinarian right in my own backyard! Animal Care of Oradell and Dr. Christian Hurst and his staff are warm, welcoming, caring, professional - everything you would want in a veterinary clinic. It is really a joy to have them in Oradell. I stopped in to talk with them about the cat I had adopted and some of the challenges we have faced with her and got great feedback. The day after my cat's check up I not only got emailed a detailed report, I got a phone call to see how she was doing after her visit. That's a first for this seasoned pet owner. Did I mention that they are also a wild animal drop off? Can't say enough good things about this business. Thank you for coming to Oradell!

Anthony Santucci has recently opened a butcher shop at 302 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell (site of the former Mathew's Prime Meats). Santucci, 31 years old, appeared on "The Bachelorette" and comes from a long line of butchers starting with his great grandfather. A rare find and a great little shop in the wonderful town of Oradell!

When my husband and I were ready to choose a community to raise our family in, we had some very specific criteria. We wanted a community like the one we both grew up in, relatively small and tight knit where you knew everyone in town. We wanted a place that felt safe and a small town, where our son could jump on his bike and meet friends at a ball field. Oradell is all this and more.

It also had to have great schools. Oradell fit the bill beautifully with just one grammar school, the largest in Bergen County, a regional middle school (River Dell Middle School) for 7th and 8th grade and a regional high school (River Dell High School) for 9th-12th grades. Children from Oradell attend school with children from the town of River Edge just next door. Although the middle school has planned get-togethers for the children the summer before middle school starts, many know each other already. Oradell and River Edge children are involved in shared recreation programs throughout their elementary school years.

The recreation facilities are second to none with gorgeous ball fields and the state-of-the-art Doug Parcels Athletic Complex in addition to the middle school and high school facilities. There is also a beautiful (private) swim club with four pools.

Oradell has terrific transportation with both bus and train service to Manhattan. It is also conveniently located close to highways and the Garden State Parkway. The Paramus shopping malls are just next door and we have a lovely downtown area as well.
