This Saturday, May 10th, 2014 is the dedication of the new park Stewart Woods in Oakland. Located in the heart of town on Ramapo Valley Road, Stewart Woods is named in honor of resident Dorothy Stewart, who fought for the borough to make something of this property, rather than allow it be used for commercial or residential purposes. Although Dorothy Stewart passed away in 2005, her daughters will be in attendance to commemorate their mother and her advocacy for the park. To spruce the park up, various organizations came together to do so, including Matthew Richards of Boy Scout Troop 49 who created trails and added benches and tables for his Eagle Scout project. The dedication ceremony will be held Saturday at 10:00 am. For more information, view the article below.

Kids were able to take pictures with the Easter Bunny, get creative with some arts and crafts and enjoy delicious snacks. The Public Events Committee organizes several great events each year, with the next one being the Memorial Day Parade.

  • As a long time Oakland resident who has raised my kids here, I can say that Business Week magazine got it right when they ranked Oakland, NJ in 2007 as a top 50 "Great Places to Raise Kids - for less." Nestled near the Ramapo Mountains, Oakland puts you close enough to serenity, but not too far from big city life, being less than 30 miles from NYC.

There is a bus line that runs a regular weekday schedule back and forth to Manhattan with an express option in the morning. There are also several commuter train options within a short drive away.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, you will always find what you are looking for in Oakland. Crystal Lake Beach Club provides swimming, outdoor concerts and many other activities. If you're a real nature lover, hike through miles and miles of trails, go fishing or maybe take the dog on a walk in the Ramapo Mountains nearby. Recently added right in the heart of town is an outdoor farmers market that runs from June through October.

There are just enough retail stores and restaurants in town without losing that small town charm, and if you need your Starbucks fix, we have that too. You are a short car ride away from shopping in one of the greatest shopping malls in NJ, the Garden State Mall.

If you are looking for highly rated public schools, Oakland is the right place. There are three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools to choose from; Indian Hills HS is right in town and Ramapo HS is in the neighboring town of Franklin Lakes. Oakland kindergarten recently moved to full day classes. If you are looking for a highly rated private school, Barnstable Academy is in Oakland as well.

With convenient transportation to NYC and easy access to major highways, Oakland is not only a great location for commuters, it is also a great town for families, as voted by NJ Monthly. With a population of just over 12,000, Oakland has an excellent school system with high test results and full-day Kindergarten.

The median price of a home in Oakland in 2012 was $462,500 with an average tax bill of $10,318, keeping Oakland reasonable and affordable. There are three elementary schools within Oakland and one middle school. For high school, students have the option to choose between two highly ranked schools, Ramapo and Indian Hills.

During the summer months, the town of Oakland offers plenty of recreational sports and activities to keep all ages flourishing!
