One of the great things about living in Monmouth Beach are the community wide events held through the course of the year. On May 28, the Monmouth Beach Street Fair, sponsored by the Monmouth Beach Beautification Committee, ushered in the summer season. Held on Beach Road, there were many local business and vendors as well as Monmouth Beach civic organizations selling or promoting their products and services. Many, if not most, vendors were Monmouth Beach residents. The weather was perfect and the turnout huge, making it a great event for the community.

Monmouth Beach helped kick start the Memorial Day Weekend as several local businesses participated in an outdoor market event on May 23rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event was held to celebrate Monmouth Beach Beautification Committee’s (MBCC) 10 year anniversary. There are an estimated 35 members of MBCC, many of whom can be seen on a regular basis planting and watering flowers throughout the town. The turnout was good as attendees came out to enjoy the perfect weather, listen to music, shop, and eat. Some members expressed their delight in the turnout and mentioned they would consider making this an annual event.

Last night, I was invited by a West Long Branch friend to a health seminar taking place at the parish in Monmouth Beach. She found out about it from her friend who lives in MB. Apparently, last night was one of a series of free talks covering the "Four Pillars of Health". I saw the Nutrition pillar. The previous two were Sleep and Brain Health. The next one in February will be the last pillar, Physical Fitness. These talks are not only to inform adults but they also focus on teaching children, so parents don't have to find a babysitter. They can just bring their kids with them.

Afterward, myself, my friend, and two others, decided to go to Boyle's Tavern. I had never heard of it. Apparently it has been around for decades in Monmouth Beach. I was pleasantly surprised how quaint it was, looking like it was someone's house. And it is tucked away down some little street that I probably won't be able to find again in the daylight. But I will try! So two reasons to like Monmouth Beach, even if you don't live there!

Monmouth Beach will once again have a farmer's market this summer. Every Saturday, local merchants will sell their fresh produce, flowers, dairy and baked goods on Beach Road in front of the Borough Hall. The market will be open 9:00am until 1:00pm or until items are sold out.

The farmer's market has become a popular fixture in town and is a great opportunity to by fresh food from local growers and producers.

On May 13, 2014 at 7:30 PM in the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center on Ocean Avenue, the Monmouth Beach Historical Society will be sponsoring an event titled "The First Ladies According to Martha Washington". Free to the public, Martha Washington, as played by actress Maggie Worsdale, will be sharing interesting facts and stories about some of America's other First Ladies.

Throughout the year there are a number of interesting and informative events scheduled at the Cultural Center, which was once a Coast Guard Life Saving Station.

Over 50 volunteers from both Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity built a house in the middle of Times Square. The March 2014 build of the 2 bedroom house was part of a ten city kickoff for Hammers for Habitat, which is a nationwide volunteer drive with goals of mobilizing 100,000 new Habitat for Humanity volunteers this year.

The home will be re-assembled in Sea Bright and a displaced Superstorm Sandy victim will be the direct beneficiary of this program.

Hammers for Habitat volunteers were observed in May working on the now empty lot at the corner of Marius Lane and Ocean Avenue.

On April 26th the Monmouth Beach Police, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will accept any unused and/or unwanted prescription drugs that residents may have around the home. This is the eighth time in three years that the police have scheduled such a collection. It's all part of a community effort to keep potentially dangerous prescription drugs out of the hands of children, making Monmouth Beach a safer place to live.

Programs like this help make Monmouth Beach a community where parents want to raise their children.

The Scarecrow Festival is becoming a Monmouth Beach October tradition. Contestants create themed scarecrows and place them on their yards and compete for awards. In 2013 the scarecrows will have a Hurricane Sandy theme, surprise, surprise. Other events that are part of the festival include a chili cook off, a pooch parade where residents costume their dogs and parade them in town, a pumpkin carving competition, a cupcake competition and an apple pie bake off. Events like the Scarecrow Festival help make Monmouth Beach a great place to live.

As a resident of Monmouth Beach since 1978, I can attest to the quality of life the town has to offer. Monmouth Beach has a small town feel with a sense of community. The local government is responsive, the police force is friendly and respectful of the residents and the municipal services are delivered in a friendly and efficient manner. Monmouth Beach is a town where you are safe in your home and on the streets. Various community events throughout the year help create the sense of community that makes Monmouth Beach special. The school is well regarded as is Shore Regional High School. When you drive the streets, the pride of ownership is evident throughout the community. Beach Road is "downtown Monmouth Beach" and, although quite small, it provides the focal point for the community.
