Did you know, that where the Lakeshore Village Townhouses stand now, was once the site of Bertrand Island Amusement Park? From 1925 to 1984 Bertrand Island was the destination for Family Fun. Woody Allen even shot a scene from his movie "The Purple Rose of Cairo" in 1983. In its heyday, people would line up outside the park, just waiting to enter. They sold hot dogs and cotton candy, rides included the Haunted House, the Famed wooden Roller Coaster named "Wildcat" (2nd highest roller coaster in its time), the Merry-Go-Round and the Bumper Cars. This all gave the place a unique, carnival like feel and for many years It remained a top destination for families. The Lost River Mill Chute ride was a favorite, as well as arcade games like Skee Ball and more. Check out the nostalgic video. I long to have been a part of the old days. I love a good carnival and a great roller coaster!

Do you want to have lots of fun this winter for free? Go to Hopatcong State Park! The state park entrance is located on Lakeside Boulevard. The hill is a great ride for all ages! The middle of the slope is the steepest but its sides offers a gentler ride for younger sledders. My daughter and I love to meet friends there after a snow storm. Sometimes I think I like it more than she does!

On County Road 609 Northwood Avenue, Hopatcong, NJ there is the Roland-May Eves Inlet Sanctuary located on a small cove on Lake Hopatcong. Accessed from the road, there is a place to park and watch, or you can walk across the street to the bird blind that looks out over a field and wetlands area. Bring your binoculars so you can see a variety of waterfowl, plus Belted Kingfisher, Northern Cardinal, Gray Catbird, American Robin, Bald Eagle, Great and Snowy Egrets, Great Blue and Green Herons, Song Sparrow, and Carolina Wren. Right across from the sign you can access the Highlands Trail: walk north from the parking area and turn into the first street on the left, then walk a short distance where you will find trail access on the Left. Look for the teal-colored diamond trail marker. Sussex County is known for its beauty and wildlife. If bird watching is your thing, there are many wildlife trails you can take to enjoy nature. Check out the URL below for more info on Highland Trails.

Get ready! It happens every year in February so register now. If you are one of those people that like to do something insane!!! to raise money for a good cause, then this is calling your name. So pay it forward at the Elks Club annual Polar Bear Plunge. It all started In 2010, when 38 people agreed to take the plunge to raise money to help the parents of special needs children. The Elks raised $22,000 that first year. This year over 200 people have pre-registered to participate in the fourth annual Leap in the Lake on Feb. 9. Ahhhhhh! Life in the summer on Lake Hopatcong. My husband wakes up at literally the crack of dawn to suit up and meet his ski buddies. That is the time of the morning when the water is as they say "like glass" and is apparently the best time to ski. When the water is smooth my husband almost salivates and can barely pour his morning coffee as he rushes out the door to water ski. Me? I'm just content to watch from the deck as I sip my coffee and cheer him them on. Yes, life is good on the lake!
