There's a lot to love about living in South Jersey. With easy access to Philly and a short drive to the Jersey Shore, there are always a wealth of things to see and do. But it's not just the "big draws." Many of South Jersey's communities have developed vibrant and exciting downtown areas, filled with wonderful options for entertainment and dining. There are also a number of special events throughout the area, including craft fairs, car shows, and holiday festivals. Just in the last year, I was at events in Medford, Marlton, Barrington, Collingswood and Pitman, to name just a few. One of my favorites was Haddonfield's First Night celebration, which brought musicians, comedians and all kinds of entertainers into town for a family oriented way to ring in the New Year.

I am fortunate enough to live within easy driving distance of Haddonfield; on a warm day, I could easily walk downtown. During the summer, you'll frequently catch my sister and me stopping by Harrison's to pick up some seasonal decorations, then swing over to Gracie's Water Ice & Ice Cream Parlour for soft serve ice cream before heading home. If I'm with a close friend who is on a gluten-free diet, we'll sometimes throw in a stop at The Posh Pop Bake Shop, which is an entirely gluten-free bakery with many wonderfully tasty items. If you know anyone who has to be on a gluten-free diet, you probably know that "tasty" can sometimes be a challenge.

Nowadays, there are a wide range of nice restaurants in Haddonfield - Little Tuna, Fuji, and The British Chip Shop to name just a few. But my most usual haunt is the Haddonfield Bistro, right on Kings Highway, which serves food ranging from casual (I love their burgers) to fancier entries.

One of my favorite South Jersey anecdotes involves an event that happened right out front of the Bistro during one of Haddonfield's festivals last year. I was walking down the street and saw someone I recognized from...someplace... approaching me. We got closer, our eyes met for just a second, and I gave him a smile and little wave and said, "Hi." I couldn't place him, but I thought I must have met him at an open house or something. He responded with a friendly "Hello" as he passed, and that was that...for about four more steps. Then I whipped around to stare at the man's retreating back as I realized that I recognized him, not from an open house, but from seeing him on television - he was the owner of the Philadelphia Flyers! I wonder if he was thinking, "who in the world was that?" as he walked away!

It is with great sadness that I report that Ed Snider, the man I said hello to in Haddonfield not-so-long-ago, passed away today. RIP Ed.
