Stewartsville is a small town of approximately 5,229 residents and our township has an area of 11.15 square miles. Greenwich was incorporated in 1738 and is one of Warren County’s oldest townships. The area was first settled in the late 17th century by pioneers who began farming along Pohatcong Creek. Our town was named after Thomas Stewart, a secretary to George Washington. Thomas Stewart purchased 360 acres and began to reside in Greenwich in 1793. The original Stewart home still stands along with many other farm houses and mills.

    Greenwich Township, NJ
Although much of the community has been built since the 1990's, Greenwich Township has a rich history dating all the way back to the Lenni-Lenape Indians. In 1677, our earliest settler, John Cook, purchased 1,111 acres of land from this tribe. Establishing a home and working mill on his property, Mr. Cook, along with other local mills, supplied feed and flour to the Continental army while encamped in Morristown, New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. "Cook Court", one of many streets named after our earliest settlers, is located in the Wyndham Farm Subdivision.

The "Hamlet of Stewartsville" located in the center of the Township, is aptly named after our former resident, Lt. Thomas Stewart, who fought in the Revolutionary War serving alongside George Washington at Valley Forge. Later, becoming one of the state's first civil engineers, Stewart surveyed most of the farms in Warren County. The Stewart's Hunt Subdivision, a neighborhood of fine homes on approximately 1 acre parcels, is located off of North Main Street across from the Emergency Squad. "Thomas Stewart Way" is located within this subdivision, and is named after Lt. Stewart as well.
